A kill switch would be a good idea. The best bet would be to just put a switch in series with your 12V going to your coil. That way you would have to flip the switch before you turned the key. Otherwise it would crank but would never kick over because it would have no spark.

I hope your friend gets his Pontiac back soon. Oldsguy had a 76 Cutlass stolen years ago and the police never found it. Well, they did but then somone at the city stole it again. Sad story! We have our fingers crossed for your friend.
