I just got a 66 98 LS to use as a daily driver. The interior is super nice and it runds great. The body is a 20'er and the underniesh is VERY crusty.

The biggest problems are the broken speedo cable (it got pinched by the coil spring) and the Comfortron HVAC system that ocationally works.

I have had full size 60's Pontiacs and Chryslers for years but this is my first big Olds.

I look forward to meeting other 66 B-body owners here.

I'd like to see apic of your "Deuce and a Quarter" I spent many a wonderful nite in mom's 66

 

I have attached pictures of the Caddy (It's my wife's car) and the Bonnie convertible.

I also have a picture of the Buick as it was leaving my house last year. I had owned it since 1987 and hated seing it go but it had gotten caught in the flood of 2008 (I live in Iowa) and it was only usefull as a parts car after that. It went to WI to be a parts car for a 72 Buick collector.

I, too, bid you welcome. I have quite a bit of knowledge to share on the '66 98's and may be able to help you with the Comfortron. I also have a speedo cable (full length, not Cruise Control) that is usable but not cherry. Get settled in and then start asking questions. We are all here to help, at least most of us.

I may take you up on your speedo cable. I am not looking forward to removing mine from the spindle. I think I will need to make a tool to get it off or just cut it off so i can get a socket on it.

Thats a sweet 57 Cad. I worked for a commerical greenhouse in highschool and the owner had a 57 cad with just the reverse color scheme of your wifes car. The unique thing about it was that it was a three speed column shift car. He didn't trust those new fangled auotmatic things. His words. Always wondered what happened to that car.

 

Carmax - I have never found removing the speedo cable from the spindle to be too much of a problem. Since yours is already shot, cutting it off and using a socket is probably not a bad idea. If you need the one I have, let me know. I just sent one so I know the shipping is $10 and I'll let you have the cable for another $10. As I said before, it is not pretty but it is usable. You might even find one nearer to you. They were used on quite a few of the big cars - just check for front wheel driven units.

No yet. After I got the cable and seeing what it is suposed to look like I think my dust cap is ruined also.

And..... My shop if full of a honey do project. I hope to have the 98 in the shop within the next week.

Anyway I'm pretty sure the 60's Imperials were the biggest, heaviest aircraft carriers to ever ride on four wheels. I've heard stories that the bumpers bolt to a 2" thick steel plate and you need a 30 lb. sledgehammer to dent the body... Can you confirm any of these myths?

 

I'm fairly sure the 60s Imperials were built on truck frames.

 

Being a 67 my Imperial was the first year that Imperials shared the basic body with the Chrysler/Mopar C-body (sub frame/unibody). It was a HUGE subframe and a very strong unibody (just ask the derby guys).

The 66 and earlier Imperials have a very very heavy frames. Their wheels use the 5 1/2" bolt circle which is the same as a Ford truck. This may be where the "truck frame" thing comes from. Also having seen an Imperial frame and felt the thickness of the steel I would say they are as strong as any 3/4 ton or lighter truck frame.

Some interesting trivia: All of the stainless on 66 and earlier Imperials is chrome plated because polished stainless is not quite as bright as chrome.

What is funny is that my co-workers ask how I can drive such a large car. I comment that it's really not any bigger than a Suburban (which many of my co-workers drive) it's just shorter.

Being a derby guy (not so much lately), you are 100% correct. Toughest cars period.. My buddy used to get 9 or 10 derbies out of them.
