The standard OEM tire size on the 88s was 7.60x15. P225/75R15 is very close to the original size. They're a little wider, but about the same diameter as the 7.60x15s. The OEM wheels were 5.5". I think you'll find the minimum recommended wheels size for the P225/75R15 is 6".
When considering brand, everyone has their favorites. Prices don't necessarily reflect the quality of a tire. Compare temp, traction, and treadwear ratings. It's not an exact science, but a good guide.
If you're looking for wide whites that are correct for 1956, I suggest looking at Diamondback Classics. Rather than reproducing old fashioned carcasses like another popular classic tire company, Diamondback uses modern high quality tires and vulcanizes whitewalls to them. Their customer service is excellent and pricing is competitive.
If you're not fussy about the whitewalls, just shop around for the best deal on a quality tire.
