Correct 72 442 Vert Tires?

I know they're supposed to be G70-14's and want to go with RWL - should they be Firestone Wide Ovals? - And where's the best deal on a set?

Joe,

I find tirerack.com has some great prices. I'm not sure if they still make the firestrone indy500 wide ovals like they used too.

Maybe someone else can chime in if they do. I'd be interested in eventually going that route as well.

I have what I believe to be the original spare in my 1970 442 and it's a Wide Oval. But there's been some discussion on this and what I remember is there were 2 or 3 different tires that could have been used. I think it depended on the assembly plant, but it may have been who had the contract for a specific run. Check out the thread below, and then if you want more infor try using the search option by tire name. John

Thanks for the info and the thread redirect. Looks like thea Goodyear Poyglas or Firestone Wide Ovals could be correct - anyone out there have an opinion as to which looks better? Will be a Flame Orange car with SS III wheels - I'm leaning towards the Firestones.

I've always liked the Firestone's as well, Coker tire has them, I'm sure others as well...

Wound up buying a set of 4 of The firestone Wide O Ovals from - of all places - Summit. Was 848.00 for the set delivered to Dallas Texas - was the best price I could find anywhere by about 30.00.

here's probably a dumb question... I have 15 x 7's SSII rims and looking to purchase tires... I am looking to get 235/60r15s for front and 255/60/r15s for rear...

lets say there are 3 sizes of rims 14x6 , 15x7 and 15x8 - what should I watch out for when buying the above tires so they fit correctly?.. whats the rule.

Cool! Joe, do you have a picture of the final product?

I'm also slowly looking around for a spare tire.

Hello Tony,

Thanks for asking - no, I dont have them mounted up yet - just got the rims back from the painter and still have to do all the polishing work on the wheel trims, center caps and trim rings. Just today, got a complete set of the correct NOS lug nuts -will post some pics in the Major Builds thread I have soon.

How's the cowl rust repair coming? After seeing what you did with those grills, that rust doesn't stand a chance...

Hey Joe,

Sounds great! I can't wait to see what it looks like. Polishing/painting/cleaning is always an adventure to say the least.

My cowl rust has been eliminated! Here is a before picture.. Note the rotten metal.. everywhere..

Here is after i primed/welded the dash piece in (it looks way more glossy than it is..)

And here is the finished windshield installed product!

I bet those tires will look great on your car! Will need to come look at it when it is closer to completion! Let us know what you think of the ride and performance of them. I think Lady's next set of shoes will be the wide ovals...

Rob,

Wide Ovals look really really sweet. You know, before i bought my oldsmobile, i had my heart set on buying a set of SSI rims for wide ovals tires. But i'll be honest, the SSII and SSII rallye rims have REALLY grown on me. (the set that i have i bought off a guy that needed money for 200 dollars (already mounted on brand new Radial T/A's.)

If somehow i save up 800 dollars (as joe said thats what they cost) I'm definitely going to go that route.) I think the look of the wide ovals is unsurpassed.

They don't have a picture with the rallye SSII rims, but here is a pic from the coker site.

There's just something about a car with OE tires that immediately makes you take it more seriously (at least for me) and give it a good look over at a show etc....
