Question Wiring up my floor shifter

I have a 72 cutlass that was converted to a floor shifter. The previous owner never put a console over top of it. I got a console, and a console to dash harness, and I have a question. There is some is a black switch on the left side of the shifter assembly, that has a 2 prong vertical electrical connection, and a 2 prong horizontal connection. What is this switch, and what do I hook up to the 2 connections? Both the console harness and harness extension cannot hook to it. ANy help would be great. P.S.- I ordered a service manual, but have not gotten it yet, and my hayes and chiltons are of no help

It sounds like it could be the neutral safety switch.

My book shows a neutral start and back up switch, should be a harness with two plugs

Ok thats what I thought. The current location of those switches is the bottom of my steering column. So do I need to bypass the column switch? Or get a harness that plugs into both the column and shifter? Also I have been to a bunch of the part suppliers, and havent seen any harnesses for the shifter, besides the console harness, and console harness extension. Do I need to fab one up, or find and original?

Your best bet is to just cut the end off the plug in the steering column, extending your wires and route em down to the shifter, putting the plug back on and going from there
