on my 55, The side cover, pan, and selector shaft seal were all leaking, sometimes a good service manual can give you some good ideas of what to look for, good luck and let me know how it goes, Next time I am out I will ask some people.

Is it leaking from the front or the back of the transmission. You may need to put some clean paper down under it to see. If it is dripping from the front, it is probably a front pump seal. The seal is not expensive but you have to pull the transmission to change it. If it is near the rear, it would be the tailshaft seal. Then you just have to pull the driveshaft to replace it. It has been my experience it will more than likely be the front pump seal.

Good luck.

There are a dozen different leak paths, not counting an unlikely crack in the case. I'm afraid you'll need to be more precise than that if you expect any useful responses. When the question was asked about the front or back, that meant the front or back of the TRANSMISSION, not the front or back of the car.

It would also help to know the type of transmission (and please don't just say "automatic") since different GM transmissions have different leak points. Potential leak points are the input shaft/torque converter seal, cooler line fittings, shift linkage shaft, kickdown cable, electrical connector plug, dipstick tube, pan gasket, modulator, governor cover, speedometer cable, trans oil pan gasket, and ouput shaft.

And just be be certain, we're talking about reddish ATF, not black oil leaking past the rear main seal, right?

The best thing to do is to clean your transmission with a pressure washer or rags, then wait over night, and get under the car and see if you can find a path of trans fluid on the trans, and figure out where it is leaking from. If it is an abnormally large job to fix, it may be easier to dump some Lucas transmission fix and see what happens.
Let me know how it goes for you
