200-4R and 455
I intend on putting a 455 in my car in the future. I have a friend that was giving me a 200 R4 trans. Can this handle a 455 the torque of a BB? More specificly a 69 Toro motor?
Thanks for the correction Richard. I was going to take it because he said he had it rebuilt and was giving it to me. Also because of the OD. I'm just trying to measure twice and cut once...I might as well just get a TH400 which can handle it in stock condition.
Was talking to a guy from the uk who swapped the 307 olds (from his 86 cad. brougham )for an early 455. Did nothing to the existing 200 4r or the 7.5" diff. He claims he burnt rubber all over the place and owned the vehicle trouble free for 3 yrs . I doubt he is a B.S. artist but maybe he was just lucky.
From listening to olds guys here and reading further, The general consensus is NO for the 200 4r /455 combo
You say the box has been rebuilt--that could mean anything from standard upwards.--you would need to know the specs n ask someone on here about the upgrade --if any.

I think 442Scotty has the right idea.
I have a 85 Grand National 2004R in my 455 powered 68 cutlass with a 3.55 posi.
Alright, I'll come clean now (Zero Miles)
.
But I'm confident this trans can perform under the right circumstances.
Don't plan on running this stock. You'll nuke it.
Modified, however, is a different story.
The GN crowd runs this in 9 sec. quarter miles.... With Slicks!!!
Plan on dumping 2K to build it for a solid 455.
Here's my theory.
Run your car 200-1000 miles / year. Run a TH400. It is bulletproof and who cares about getting 10 mpg or the high RPM's on the highway.
Run your car 3000 miles or more / year. Run a 2004R. You'll enjoy the peaceful and low RPM highway cruise and reasonable gas mileage.
Let's face it. You might as well run a small block on 3.42's if you are going to run a big 455 on 2.56 gears. Run the Big 455 on 3.42's and still drive on the highway like you have a 2.3 rear. Life is good when you have the best of both worlds.

It`s the ol` weigh one agst the other trick.
good luck mike

I'm very interesed in this as well. Mostly interested in cruising and want an overdrive. I have most of the parts to drop in my 455 except tranny. 200 4r sounds like the ticket if I can find a good one to rebuild. Where is this kit from?
the kit is from
PRO-BUILT AUTOMATICS
909-795-1876
CALIMESA , CA.
I too am interested in this kit --for me it has to be a kit owing to the fact I have a 200-4r and am too distant to get a fully builkt up trans shipped anyway.
The GV plus TH400 will cost more than a built 200-4R, especially once you factor in the custom driveshaft, crossmember mods, etc.
tis true, but I was planning on getting most of that stuff changed anyway. I also like the idea of a six speed auto, but that's just me.
Has anybody had experience with carbon fiber drive shafts? am thinking of running one but don't know if they work on the street, stones and such..
