more help!pans off,now what?A.T.roto-5
well for those who have been reponding to my 1st set of ?s(& anybody
else)i received my trans filter & now have the pan off&dont want to put back on until i feel confident that i have done everything i can or should while pan is off.(for those who do not know, its on a '63cutlass,roto-hry- dramatic, just bought off ebay, was told drove&shifted great but when de livered, would go into&drive in all gears, even reverse works correctly, but will not shift.another symtom, when in L or S &let off acc.pedal it drags down to a stop like a downshift(normal)but when in D & let off acc.ped al,it free rolls(like in N)& doesnt drag like downshift.like it wants to shift. so i ordered filter & now have pan off)i really do not want to remove the C.V.A.(was told its difficult, especially on my back, must be very careful not to loose small parts, know how to put back)unless it is very critical that i do.i was hoping i could clean & lubricate it & work it around in case of sticky valve.now the Governor,if i can remove it without drop- ping the pan(i know the u-joint,yoke&ext.housing case must be removed but does the pan need to be off?)if not then my plan is to install new filter&pan, add new fluid, then try it out.if still doesnt work, then check Governor.or should i just look at Gov. now before i put back together? should i flush tranny?64olds(i think)says to put back together&fill(not over or under fill),disconnect return line from rad.&connect hose to fit- ting&other end into clear jug, start engine&run until fluid is clean, shut off&reconnect&top off fluid.true?should i?open for all suggestions.i am getting very anxiuos.thanx,Don old.n.bold@hotmail.com 330 652 7336 |

tell me what you dont understand.i have a '63 Cutlass w/roto-hydramatic trans.i just bought it,was told that it drove&shifted well.it DOES NOT SHIFT at alll!reverse works
as should.when put in any forward gear:L,S,D the car does drive but WILL NOT SHIFT at any speed at all or it STAYS IN SAME RANGE.That is my problem. My question is WHY?everything else i say are some symptoms, things i have tried&things i have read or heard.so if you get confused, just forget about anythimg else.to possibly help,i con tinue:i notice there is a difference when starting out in L or S then starting out in D. Which is: when in L or S & about 15mph & you let your foot off gas pedal it drags you down like it should because it is in 1st or L..But when you start out in D & at 15 miles per hour&you let your foot off the gas pedal, the car does not drag.Instead it feels like you put it in N,like it wants to shift&it is suppose to do because it is NOT in L or S but it is in D.So i am just saying that, the different forward gears are working correct ly but it WILL NOT SHIFT.I am also saying that it could be a sticky valve in C.V.A. (Control Valve Assembly)or the Governor.I have never touched either&was told that i do not want to mess with C.V.A. because it is very difficult to put back together& not loose the small parts especially laying on my back.so i was asking if i could clean or do somethimg to the C.V.A. without removing it?Then i was asking ifthe trans pan needs to be removed to check the Governor?if it does, then i was going to look at it now while the pan is off,if the tranny pan does NOT need to be off, then i was NOT going to check the Governor now.I am going to install new filter&pan, add fluid & take the car for a drive to see if it shifts. Then i was asking about flushing the trans after installing the new filter, pan&fluid?if its a good idea, then i was making sure if this is the way:after installing new filter, pan&fluid, disconnect return line from radiator,con- nect a hose to fitting&other end in a clear jug.start engine&run until fluid is clean (about 30sec.)turn car off.reconnect return line&top off fluid?the last question is: does anyone have a BT-33-2 Gauge Tool?or does anyone know the length of it?Be- cause i need it for correct T.V.linkage adjustment.According to my 1963 Oldsmobile service manual to complete step1(adjusting TVlinkage)it is needed when you discon nect the lower TV rod from the TV lever on side of trans to line up the hole in the lever with the hole in the BT-33-2 tool.So if you can help with any or all of questions i sure will appreciate it.sooner the better.i am very anxious.thanx,Don 330 652 7336 |
