TH 400 - Custom Cruiser

The transmission in my 1975 Custom Cruiser just went. Any ideas on finding a used one? And, even if I did, wouldn't it cost an arm and a leg to ship? Thanks!

Concur. Rebuild the one in it and you'll have an essentially new transmission.

'Course you must remember the T400 hasn't been manufactured in well over 20 years, so finding a shop familiar with them may be a challenge. I had to have the one in me 76 Ninety Eight rebuilt in 2001, and the shop that did it had one builder who knew anything about them. That's when it struck me that the T400 was on its way to being the HydraMatic or DynaFlow of its day, though to me it's still a modern transmission- and a damn good one at that.

I would think any reputable trans shop can handle a simple TH400 rebuild for you $6-700 If you pull it. Have them put some of the upgrades into it such as better frictions and a shift improver kit along with an upgraded modulator.

As the others have said - rebuild! A new Trans from B&M is over 1100.00 + shipping so the money you spend at a good shop will likely offset that.

Find out what the transmission shop warranty is 'in writing' before you commit to them. Most shops don't charge that much to take the tranny out of the car to work on it, and that's a nice feature since you don't have to worry about all the trans fluid that will puke out when you take out the driveshaft.

X2 with Allen. If you do decide to go with a upgraded "crate" trans it will already have all the modern upgrades with a warranty. They are usually dyno tested too. You can choose the desired level of performance. Consider upgrading to synthetic trans fluid. ATI offers a good one as do many others. Source Jegs, Summit, B&M etc for all of this including a new converter...Be sure to retain your cars original trans if that's important to you. The crate trans will also come with the handy tail and input shaft plugs which you can use to avoid the dreaded trans fluid puke Allen mentioned...been there
