1991 Trofeo "Electrical System Problem" in VIC display.

Hi.

I need to repair my father's 1991 Trofeo. It has that fancy VIC screen in it and that is working okay up to a point. It only has 44,000 miles on it and it has this problem:

The car starts up and runs fine for a while. Then the A/C compressor shuts off and all the guages go dead except for the tachometer and then the VIC displays the message:

Electrical System Problem

Service Check Required

I have a service manual, but was hoping that someone here had seen this problem and would give me some good advice as to where to start.

Thank you.

Hi.

I have good news to report: The problem is fixed.

I replaced the guage cluster with a reburbished one I bought off Ebay for $150. Problem solved.

Now if I could get the headlight doors to quit making extra noise right after they open.

They close just fine. Just everytime you open them, when they get to where they are supposed to stop, they just keep moving about an eighth inch up and down about 10-15 times then they stay open okay. I have read about some bushings. I ordered some. I will try to replace them and let you know how it goes.

Trofeo! Toriffico!

i wish i had seen your post earlier. my dads 90 Trofeo had a very simelar problem and was the gauge cluster. it took 3 dealers and about $2000 till it was figured out. the last dealer (the one that fixed it) took it out and sent it off to a place that fixed it. they said it was a devision of GM they sent it to but would not tell us where that was.

I'd about bet my life it was this place. Specmo in Flint, MI. It was referred to me by a very reliable garage specializing in Oldsmobile repair in Lansing, MI on Clippert Street. One of the men there said that is where GM sent a lot of warranty work back in the day. The links for Specmo and the place on Ebay are listed below respectively:

Anybody got any thoughts on the headlight doors wiggin out?
