68 Toronado

Just had my dad pick me up a 68 Toronado (I am in Turkey) for 250 bucks. Not running at the moment and needs some interior work done but all in all not a bad car...especially considering the price. I came across this site looking for references and trying to decode the body tag. I have figured out some of it but can't figure out the whole thing. I tried the search and got answers but as every car is different all my questions couldn't be. I will attach a pic in hopes that you really smart olds guys can help.

Welcome to our site. All I can offer is the obvious that you already know. 68 is year of cours, 3 is Oldsombile, 9487 is two door coupe. The body and paint codes I cannot decipher but I am sure some members will help out. Enjoy our site.

Just here for a couple of years. Just spent 8 years in the Tacoma area. Looking forward to chasing parts for the "new" car. Have to find some tailights for my dad's 68 also.

Welcome! Looks like the paint code is N6, which would be a burgundy car with a parchment top. Nice combo.

Well, that COULD be an "M" and not an "N". It's a little hard to see in the pic. Which would make more sense. "M" is Cinnamon Bronze. Personally, I really like that color and will look really striking with a white top. At first from the pics, that almost looks like surface rust on bare metal. Hence, the brown. However, I'm guessing that it's simply the paint.

Thanks everybody! As for my screen name csa000...I fear it isn't a confederate espionage ploy or anything other than lack of imagination...csa are my intials and the zeros are just filler. I have the picture of the body tag on my computer and can zoom in for a better look. To me the tag says I6 of 16? the "m" or "n" in question is a dark spot on the aluminum. Thanks again for all the help. I have just downloaded the Fusick catalog and get to start building my wish list

Well, there's no "I" paint code for '68. Perhaps you should ask your dad what it is for verification.

And Fusick's is a good place. Ordered many parts from them.

Paint code 69 Toro

Well finally got signed up had a devil of a time getting the activation replies just weren't working but got it eventually.
Anyway I am the Dad and the paint code is an M which would make it the cinnamon not to sure what to make of what is left of the vinyl top whats left looks black in places.
Got to dig through my old issues of Front Wheel Driver know somewhere in there there is an issue with the run down on all this just have to find it old school, dig through the paper.
Curt

Welcome! Top color codes for 1968 Oldsmobiles is as follows:

Black (Code 2)
Blue (Code 4)
Teal (Code 5)
Parchment (Code 6)
Buckskin (Code 7)
Gold (Code 8)

So, either the dealer replaced the top to help it sell, or that is simply a replacement top that has seen the ravages of time. What color is the interior?

Is that tan or just dirty parchment? Either way, that's gonna be a great looking car when you get it back to shape.

interior

Good evening!
And thanks for the welcome the interior I think is a dirty parchment, it is to light for a tan I believe.
I have found two thirds of the article I was looking for as soon as I find the last part of it will see about getting it posted somewhere. It is a work by Darwin Falk of TOA and is quite detailed on reading mid 60s GM body tags.
Later Curt

Hi! Good luck with your car! How does its floor and frame look?

And: I assume who ever has a 68 Toronado is looking for some taillights (lens but also reflector parts). They seem always to be cracked and crumbling...

Noone makes them as aftermarket.

OK- here we go. You have a 1968 Toronado with Y69 Custom interior trim.

Built 3rd week August (08C)

Original color is Cinnamon Bronze (code M), a Toronado-only special order color.

It had a Parchment (code 6) vinyl roof cover that has seen better days. The black you see on the roof is the vinyl's cloth backing.

088 indicates it has a Buckskin all-vinyl Strato-bench seat interior which was part of the Custom trim option . It shows up in the C&F book as 58 (5= vinyl custom bench seat trim; 8= Buckskin. 78 is Strato-bucket seats in Buckskin).

Kind of odd to see the Strato-Bench Custom interior with wind-up windows.

Well I am sure my dad will chime in later on it but he and I seem to have a knack at getting "strange" or "They never came that way" cars. Thanks for all the help figuring that body tag out.

It is indeed the all vinyl strato not buckets but bench with an arm rest and folding seats, I think this is still called a Strato option?
The only fancy option I have found on the Toro so far is it does have a vacuum trunk latch something even my console shift toro does not have strange!
I have found bits of white vinyl at the edges now that I have looked closer.
