86 cutlass wont start

I bought an 86 cutlass ive only been driving it a few weeks it has a 305 with 4 barrel carb.I was driving today and the car stalled and wouldnt start.i had it towed home and took a look at it.The engine turns over but it wont start the carb spits fuel out and smoke comes from the carb.I thought because its gettin fuel it might not be sparking.I replaced the ignition module....still nothing.I looked at the plugs besides being dirty they look ok.The car previously had been sputtering a bit and stalled out a few times when it was cold but always started back up and had been running pretty good.
