That's the SW part of the state near the California border along Interstate 5. Contact me for photos and details. I have 330's and 425's with the heads drilled for California Emissions, some 425 & 455's are Toro engines with large valves and oil pans. John

Sorry, I don't. I need a set of those too and kick myself for not buying them a few years ago. The W30 parts are worth their weight in gold these days! John

What is the deal with the D heads for 455? Everyone wants C. Just wonder because D is what is on my 455. Never herd any one ask for D.

Heads/Parts

Hamm, please check the letter on your engine. The D was only used on the 1968 and 1969 W30 and Hurst Olds. They are very rare, so you seldom hear people asking for them 'cause they just can't find them C heads were on the big blocks from 1967-69 and have a reputation of being really good heads. If someone had a good machinest do port work most if not all of the big block heads could flow really well. Your other message said you were asking for a 1972 speaker, I may have it and will reply to that message after I look. If your car has the original engine the heads should have a letter G with a small capitol A just to the right bottom corner of the G. If you did have D heads you would have no problem selling them and having the money to do more work to your 1972.... if that's what you wanted to do. John

Thumbs up

You can see the D in this photo. Just had a complete redo on this and it is a 68 block. Not original, but came with the car. And I wandered? Because these had huge valves and exhaust ports. Ho yea, and sorry for using your thread for the different subject. I have posted this photo on different threads and no one has said anything about it. Now I know why no one ask for them. Thanks for the offer, but not for sale.

D heads

Wow! Lucky Guy! A few years ago these were going for $500-800 a set. The last ones I saw on ebay went for over $3,000. I've got a 1969 W30 that's missing these heads. Jamesbro is apparently needing them for his 1969 Hurst Olds too. So if you ever change your mind it would be hard for me to come up with all the cash, but I could offer lots of interesting stuff in trade. Including a set of E heads that have $1500 worth of work done on them. Fresh, I haven't put them on an engine yet and I expect they would flow better than the factory D heads. But I don't want to be rude, you stumbled onto a good deal. Do you have the bolt on parts from that engine still? If it was a W30 or Hurst Olds engine the carb and distributor would have numbers showing that. If you wanted to sell them they would also bring a good price.
Congrats! John

Shipping an Engine

I shipped a 455 to Las Vegas a few months back and on the pallet it was 860 pounds. He did the research on shipping costs and paid for it on his end so I don't know the total costs. Oak Harbor freight lines was the shipper he used. I shipped a Toronado transmission plus some other parts to LA last spring also through Oak Harbor. For that the pallet weighed 560 pounds and cost just over $200. I think that's about 700 miles distance. Hope that helps. John

"C"s are rumored to flow the best, but the other guys that are better like "D", "E" are a bit on the rare side. I think only 2500 sets of "D"s were made.

"C" heads are what the Edelbrock heads are molded after. They do have a bit bigger intake valve though.

Hello Redog, I think your mixing the E and F heads. The E was 1970 455's in all cars and the F was 1970 W30. The big valve heads on all big blocks were the same, 2.07 intakes. Supercarsunlimited describes the W30 heads as having better flow charateristics, but I've not had anyone explain just what provides that. Yes the C heads seem to have more demand and Mondello says they can be made to flow better than any other castings including the W30 heads. My favorite machinest did the flow work on my E heads and his opinion is that by working with a flow bench that any of the castings can be made to flow significantly better than stock. But what a person uses also depends on what they want to do with their car. If it lives its life 1/4 mile at a time then the entire motor will have serious upgrades. If they just want a fun driver then they may only need slightly better than stock considering the torque of an Oldsmobile engine. My first project car was a 1971 Cutlass Supreme with a 455 and I put in a moderatly lumpy cam, performer intake, and 10:1 pistons. With 2.56 rear end gears it would still push me back in the seat and fry one rear tire (didn't have a posi in those days). John

Well pretty much thats what I'm looking for with my Delta.

Nothing too serious but def something I can have a lot of fun with on the street and the track

Looking for high 12's low 13's outta it, shouldn't be too hard to get to that point, don't wanna put a cage in it.

Next project, if I do one will be an early 90's Bravada with a beefy 455
