Color problem

I have a 72 convert cutlass that was painted candy apple red by the prvious owner. I want to paint the car the original color but the body tag under the hood doesn't have the paint code on it, and I don't know any other way of finding it out.
What are the original 72 colors? Did they come with rally stripes?

Welcome to the site! The tag on the firewall should have the codes for paint and interior. Would you post the codes on the tag? John

Look for one of these on the data plate attached to the firewall just above the master cylinder.

Stripes (including hood) were part of several option packages.

I am confused, as the owner already has said he has two blank color codes.

That could mean one of two things:

1) Car was ordered with a non-RPO color

2) Car had an extra-cost color. This is how they did it in 1970, but I don't know about 1970.

And what are these Rally Stripes you speak of?

They are on the hood and along the side of the car following the wheel arches and low on the door.

Just paint it red again.

There were a couple of optional paint stripe deals, available with any color as far as I know.

I believe the stripes he's talking about are the same as those standard on the 4-4-2, but I don't think they were available on the Cutlass Supreme. The Y70 stripes, which are character lines from the front to the door, then another at the rear kick-up, were available.

I am not sharp on '72s, so another opinion would be great to support or contradict mine.

It does have a hell of a paint job on it. And I thought about going back candy apple but I want it to look like MY car, and nit the previous owners. I appreciate all the help guys.

14 B is your paint code and top color. 14 is Sterling silver. I'm pretty sure the B is a black vinyl top.
Somthing like this, but with a black top.

I agree with Randy. My reference calls it Silver Pewter paint color with a black convertible top. John

That silver with the black stripes looks great!! I think that's the route I
gonna take. I might add a little tint to the silver though.

Just like the others are saying. I looked this up in the decoder and 14 is pewter silver. B means that you had a Black vinyl roof. FYI the vinyl colors were represented as:
A White
B Black
C Blue
E Sandalwood
F Brown
G Green
H Gold

If it would have been a Convertible you would have seen another single digit number to represent the color of the top. eg:
1 White
2 Black
4 Blue
5 Teal
6 Beige/Parchment
7 Buckskin
8 Yellow/gold

And no, I didn't leave out D, or 3. They simply aren't in the color chart I have.

Here's a picture of the livery your car would have been born with. (code 14 pewter silver with B Black vinyl roof) A stunning looking car. This one has a W25 hood and stripes.

me go look back at the tag. It is a convert. Black top. That code is on the tag. Does anyone have a hood for sale with the scoops that will fit a 72? I like them better than the hood that I have. (standard hood with the hood louvers)

Ok, yes. 342 is a Cutlass Supreme. 67 is a convertible. (so when combined 34267 is a Cutlass Supreme Convertible. It was built at the Lansing plant. 481161 is the vehicle sequence number for that assembly line in 72. So your car will not look like the pics I posted, but will still be a real looker! CS was a top of the line Cutlass, and the convertible option just makes it a more desireable car. IMO when the top's down the verts are as graceful and appealing a car as you'll ever find.

72drop, if you're refering to the W25 OAI hood, it was a special hood for 71 and 72 that could be ordered as part of a package. BTW, the 1970 W25 hood does not fit 71/72. I mention this because Parts Place has these hoods for around 750.00 or so with the steel liner. As far as does anyone have one for sale, thats what most of us would love to get a hold of. The only really good aftermarket hood that's made for these cars is produced by Thorntons and costs around $2250.00 plus tax, plus shipping. If you find one for sale on ebay, it's usually around 3000 to 4000 bucks. Plus you still have to buy the OAI air cleaner base and top assembly, etc., etc and this hood can end up costing you more than $5000.00 easy b4 you even start fitting or painting it.

You can buy the straight (functional) W25 hood from Fusick and Parts Place. Not sure if OPG has them yet. They only cost about 560.00, but there's no guarantee of fit, and they need different hood springs because they're ALL fibreglass. It also means that if you have a T44 hood lock, you can't use it on most all fibreglass repop hoods.

Also, the hood with the hood louvers isn't really a standard hood for a Cutlass Supreme. Most of them came without louvered hoods, or cowl vents. Unless you're prepared to fork out big bucks, I'd keep the louvered hood. Maybe clean up the louvers to give it some contrast. (The louvers were generally body color matched with chrome colored ridge accent).
