TCP has a color chip library.

http://www.tcpglobal.com/autocolorlibrary/

I was looking and they don't show any color like that for '83? I don't know where your paint code would be myself. On a sticker under the trunk lid or the door jamb?? They may say on the TCP site where it is.

Well the 74L and 74U is the color code. The L means lower and U is upper...that would be for 2 tone paint scheme. Of course same numbers would mean it's one color. After looking it up I found code 74 listed as Autumn Maple Firemist, which I assume is a very dark burgundy?

It's a deep metallic red and has been in the GM color selections since at least 1973 when Olds called it Cranberry. I think Cadillac had it in the late 60s as one of the extra cost Firemist colors, and I think they loaded it up with aluminum flake.

It matches underside of his trunk, though not as washed out as the flash made it look. Polished and waxed properly, it almost looks like it's glowing.

The color goes back to at least 1961 with Olds. It was called Garnet Mist back then and in subsequent years into the 1990s as just Garnet and/or Garnet Red, along with a number of other names. Ford even used an identical color on their 1990s on Vans. And yes, it does have a moderate amount of fine aluminum flake.

The best red Olds ever had was called Royal Mist which was a deep red fine metallic (almost burgundy). Cars painted Royal Mist are somewhat rare as it was added to the color choices in late September of 1961 for 1962 models. Seems in the early '60s someone at Olds had a thing about attaching the word "MIST" to metallic paint colors.
