wheel size for disc brakes 71 cutlass
I purchased an original disc brake assembly from a 71 Cutlass Supreme for use on my 71 Cutlass S that has original drum brakes. Can I use my 14 inch SSII wheels or do I need 15 inch when I make the conversion to disc? Also, can you use 15 inch SSII or SSIII wheels on a 71 Cutlass?
14" wheels were factory standard with disk brakes. The factory calipers and brackets WILL clear all factory 14" wheels. All bets are off for aftermarket conversions.
In the 1960s there were some factory wheels that had a different backside contour and thus only fit drum brakes. There were also 14" wheels that did clear the disc brakes. My point is that you do not need 15" wheels to clear FACTORY disc brakes on an A-body car, but as you correctly point out, you DO need the correct disc brake 14" wheels. Note that all 14" SSII/SSIII wheels do clear factory disc brakes. The SSI wheels come in two flavors - drum only and disc brake compatible.
