I have noticed a lot of new members here lately, that is awsome! There have been a lot of good, constructive, comments and recommendations that I think have been very helpfull to all of us. I seem to get the feeling that there are more than just a few people here with LOTS of experience with cars in general, not just Oldsmobiles. Whether it be from hobby or vocation, let us know what you do and how much experience you have had in various fields associated with our love of Oldsmobiles.
I will start out. Oldsmobiles is my hobby, I never worked in the automotive field to earn a living. For that, I repair electronics. 21 years in the US Navy doing radar and associated work and 11 years repairing two-way radios. I have owned a '65 f85, '72 Cutlass S, '78Delta 88, '76 98 Regency, '79 98 fourdoor, '76 Omega, '69 Delta 88 and a '48 76. I have never restored a car but have rebuilt a number of heads, one engine, one transmission, fabricated various stuff, done hundreds of brake jobs, lube jobs, oil changes, etc. I have mastered NONE of these and never will .

Into cars since I can remember. USAF; 11 years electronics (comm/nav), 9 years respiratory Therapy (the "Mac Guyver" of the hospital). Been a civilian RT for the 8 years since then.
I've owned a 66 Mustang, 67 GTO, 66 409 Biscayne, 71 Triumph Spitfire (I was in England for 6 years), 72 Skylark convertible, 81 Jeep CJ-7, various motorcycles, and (currently) a 71 Olds Cutlass convertible. C.J. |

what do you do
I own and operate an automotive repair shop in northern British Columbia and am in the process of restoring a 57 olds super 88 2drht.I have seen alot of good positive questions and answers here and enjoy reading the feedback.this can be a tricky sport and as i have read,there are many good questions on what to do and likewise many good answers. I have been in the trade for 29 years,which sounds scary when 16 years old seems like yesterday but have seen and repaired some beauties in my time so if i can help please feel free to call sean Integone@telus.net

I'm new here as of today in fact. I'm 33 married oh and a woman. I've been into classic cars ever since I was a little girl, I was the one going with my father to all the classic car swaps. My father was always wrenchin on vehicles, tractors, snowmobiles, you name it. I bought my first car from my uncle which was an '80 olds cutlass supreme, they were the original owners, they told me it was a 350 4bbl rocket, however upon changing the oil, I discovered it was a 2 bbl carb, yes, as a 16yr old I knew that. Ever since that car I was hooked on Olds!!! I married a man that use to Demo cars, now is in to racing. We are constantly working on cars, most of his racing buddies ask me when they are having engine prob's or can't seem to figure out what is wrong with their car, or just can't figure out what they are doing wrong on the race track! I'm no expert, but I seem to have some good answers!!!LOL
I'm hopefully getting my first Classic car, a 1974 Olds Cutlass!! Yes that's classic enough for me. I posted under the Cutlass section a ? Glad to be apart of the forum! |

Hi, I'm a olds fan when i ran across my 68 cutlass i've had it for 15 years doing a frame and body off. not a resteration but every thing oem rebiult or new parts. curently 34 years old, I am married have three kids. I work at Denso of Mi building radiators. Wen't to colledge at north western auto diesel school in lima ohio. ase certified in steering and syspention. After graduating I was employed at Beckley Auto Resteration, there i leaned a little body work.
we restored while i was there a 69 z28 (302 car), 68 camaro conv.,two 39 ford stack trucks and a 49 all flat heads, a 72 dodge charger, carman gia, front drive 50s citron,35 chevy coupe and a hand full off model ts. and now i'm working on my 68 cutlass s off and on for the last 8 years, in between having kids getting devorced and married again. I have owned a 54 ford pickup(that was my first car), my 68 cutlass(curently working on) basket case 68 442, 67 442 and a 68 cutlass 4 door. well hope that a little info on my automotive history. like reading every one elses reply. |

Well, looks like we have someone to come to for our suspension/steering and cooling questions! Welcome to the board rockethound and good luck with the '68! I bet those flattys were fun.
oldslvr, the '74 Cutlass is often overlooked, it seems like most people like the earlier or later models but I think the '74s are very nice too. We don't have a problem going to a women for assistance so if you have an answer to a posted question pipe right up and don't be timid! Welcome to you as well. Sean, I read a post just today about someone looking for an engine in BC. You need to hook up with them. We need people in the upper lattitudes as well so it's good to have you on board! Hope you enjoy the site!

I have loved Oldsmobiles since I started driving my first (79 98 350/400) in 1997. I now am on my second (81 98 307/200-4r -170,000MI). I just drive them (I don't race) I love the comfort of the ride, and the overall appearance (ok. the smell of the olds interior too) I just prefer to do the work that I can myself and leave the A.T.'s to the Pros. I have never had either fail (the 79 rusted out and decided to DEMO her) I consider the engines bulletproof (excluding exterior engine components obviously) as long as they are properly maintained. Thats what I do, Maintain and fix and replace exterior engine components (until (knock on wood hope it never does) somthing inside of my engine goes)

Don, I understand what you mean, take care of your ride, and it will take care of you. I agree that the Olds engines are pretty much indestructible. I had one start smoking a little on me and it needed the heads rebuilt, another that difinitely "BIT THE DUST", the engine siezed up. Extenuating circumstances were this, it was used by previous owner to tow a boat and I think he wasn't too careful about maintenance. I suspected that when I bought the car but decided to drive it till it dropped, it lasted almost four years. That was a '76 98 Regency with a 455/400. What a smooth ride though, the 98s are very comfortable cars.

here is a good one for you guys, My son is 7 and into remote control cars.
well last nov for my birthday my now wife got me a remote controle car. just so happends that it is a 72 cutlass notch back. how cool is that. being the copetiter that i am i have already up graded the battery and the motor just to have the culest rc olds cutlass. how is that for the love of oldsmobile |

I am a new comer to the car hobbie. Growing up, dad would rather pay someone to change the oil. I'm 29 and in the past couple of years I went to work for a publishing company. I was an assistant art director of a fishing magazine. They then started a new automoive mag and I had interest in running the art/photo side of the magazine. After working on the mag for a short while a was striken down with a terrible disease (automotize addiction). I still had my first car so I went to work on it (62 corvair). I'm about 3/4 of the way through it and have made some mild custom modification to it. Just last week I picked up a 62 olds Dynamic 88 4dr ht for next to nothing. It is in ruff shape, but half the fun is fixing the damn things. I've got a great resource of people that I work with, but Olds communities are great too. I'm looking forward to getting her all up and running and doing some modification to it for the Magazine (Street Thunder)

Matt, glad to have you with us here, and hope that your project goes well. Those Dynamics are really nice body styles! I saw the picture of your car on the other post, very nice. You have the right idea in my opinion as far as the treatment goes, that dark color with skirts and a slight lowering will make it Killer! My son owns a '64 98 four door hardtop six window. With all the windows down it is almost like a convertable

howdy
hay,im gerlof from holland...netherlands.
i have a olds98 holliday sports sedan 1964 whith a 394 ultra high compression engine.. the car is in all original condition..maby the engine needs some tlc,but i can do it my selve.. i love these old cars and have had about some 80 cars left behind me,from german,japanese,french,and of course american cars. i have studdied for meccanic,but now im a truckdriver so i know a little of cars.. it is here in holland sometimes a little bit diffucult too get the wright parts for youre american car. but now whit the internet its a little bit eassier.. my first american car was a valliant v100,then a dodge w200,then a 1981 camaro,a firebird ,1964 impala,caddilac1983,caprice1978,buick le sabre 1978,and now the oldsmobile. im now 34 years old,so there are a lot of cars on my wanted list..but first i want too bring the olds in 100%shape.. |

Welcome to our site! My son owns a '64 Olds 98 four door, six window hardtop! Those big cars are beautiful! He rebuilt the engine and transmission when he was in college and is going to finish restoring the interior and exterior. The original color was white but he plans on re-painting it a two tone blue with the line right along the top of the fenders and door panels where the peak is on the front fenders, should be nice.

Hi All....Am 51 and started fixing cars at age 15. First Olds experience was with my dad's 67 Cutlass. Talked my sis into buying a 71 442 back in 1974. My own first car was a 66 Delta convertable that I bought in 1974 as well. At present I own a 66 Delta 4spd, a 66 Sfire, my original 66 Convert along with another just the same, a 59 98 conv. a 67 442 conv. My daily driver is a 92 Custom Cruiser. I also help my brother with his 64 Cutlass conv, 68 Cutlass conv, 64 F-85, 70 Rallye, and his 79 Firenza. Ive belonged to the OCA for over 30 years and am really addicted to Oldsmobiles of all types. Just wish I had a bigger garage! I do most everything myself on the Oldsmobiles. For a living I work with building mechanicals and HVAC systems.

been working on cars since I was 8 with my uncle. old 5/6/7 club have done a 57 Bel Air vert a 55 fleet side tubbed chopped...still trying to pry that one from my uncle first car I owned ...66 442 auto...bought when I was 15 from my best friends dad for 500 bucks...have had a 68 Impala a 67 Cutlass supreme and now the latest addition a 67 Cutlass Supreme post was out of the hobby for a long time....Wife kids.... well you all know takes most of your time but back in it and loving it |

What i do? I am an officer in the Royal Dutch army, serving proudly in the infantry. Scheduled for Afghanistan end of this year. I have a beautiful wife and a beautiful daughter of 4 months. My rides are a 1972 Delta 88 -my daily transport, and a 1970 Harley Davidson Super Glide.

hey guys,
Definetly new here, i just bought a 69 cutlass S, 350 rocket, th350, etc... oh yeah, and me! My name is Eirik (same as eric, just spelt differently), I live in winnipeg, manitoba, canada. I'm an apprentice mechanic, working at a parts store currently, but i do ALOT of custom car work on the side, mostly audio work, fibreglassing, that kinda stuff. I'm kinda known as being a chev v6 fwd guru, but just count pass the chance on a REAL car, ( i normally work on older v6 cavaliers, beretta's, grand am's etc...), also a bit of a mini-trucker, in a flat black old school kinda way... I just dont like that ricer crap. Been reading around here for a while, then it hit me, hey, dude, you should sign up. so i did. so yeah, you'll be seeing me around.

Martijn, you should be proud of your service to your country and thank you for helping in the world-wide effort. My son is starting Officer Candidate School soon in the U.S. Army. Eirik, sounds like you have a good start on your career in automotive mechanics, my best freind has turned a wrench professionaly for 35 years and is now teaching young guys in high school. That '69 Cutlass sounds like a winner, keep it as long as you can.

Well, I do all this stuff the hard way - HANDS ON! Actually, I went through the Automotive Restoration degree at McPherson College in Kansas, figuring it would give me the kick to get into this professionally. I worked at a shop for 6mos and, well, it was a small town and they preconceived ideas about me and it never worked out. I have a wife and 2 kiddios so I can't bounce from one shop to another! So....I'll be doing this on my own.

19 years old. I love Oldsmobile's ever since i saw my first one. My dad bout one and I "joy rode" it one night. Fell in love. I love Old Schools, Have no experience with car except changing brakes and tires. I don't know anything about maintenance hell i don't even have my license. My dad says he will give me his 1981 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. Same one I joy rode 3 years ago. But this time the engine is blow (rod) so i need a replacement. Check out my post please. im 36,divorced,2 daughters, ive been working on cars since i was 14.started demo derby when i was 15,mostly chevy stuff.ive built several engines(stock and race) got into 4 wheeling along the way,i have a vey built 73 blazer.going fast has always been my thing.ive owned way to many cars to list,my first car was a 67 GMC short wide 2wd,my olds i got in 1994 when my mom finally bought a new car.its the only car i ever rode in as a kid,it took us everywhere,and rarely ever broke down.it has 228,000 miles now and still runs well,original motor and tranny,there arent many things i cant do on a car,body and paint i leave for friends,as well as rear ends and auto trannys.otherwise i can fix,change,rebuild it myself...for work i do auto glass,have for 15 years,although monday i have a job interview for a different line of work..im now finally doing a semi resto on the olds(its been in storage since 1994)i rebuilt the front end(bushings,ball joints,steering and disk conversion)and a 455 swap is in the works,im also in the middle of a frame off on my 67 GMC

I'm new to auto stuff, I just bought an old 55 s88 and am learning from there. I do not know much about nothing to be exact, buy by the time I am done i will ethier know what not to do, or what to do lol.. i am enjoying my time in the forum and learning alot.

Hello, I operate a large overhead crane in a Hot Strip Mill. We are the last fully intergrated Steel mill left in N.E. Ohio. We have a Blast Furnace, Basic Oxygen Furnace, and Rolling mills. Interesting job and I have been doing it for 38 years. My Father had a 53 Olds back in 1955, thats the first Olds I can remember. I was into Chevys during the 60's & &70's. 265/283/327/348/396/409/427, ya, I had them all. I had a 60 Dynamic and a 67 Chevelle SS 396, both beautiful cars for years but I sold them in 1983 when work was bad and my Family came first plus my Wife (now ex-wife) hated my cars. I got back into cars and Oldsmobles in 1993 when I bought my Son a Cutlass. I then got back into drag racing Olds'. I have a car hauler and I started "dragging" old 88/98's out of the fields of Ohio and mountains of Pa. for thier engines. Some of them I got attached to so instead of parting them out I "fixed" them up. I call them my "money pits." I have a dozen Olds in various stages plus a pile of engines. I have gotten "fond" of the "bigger" girls (b-bodies) even though I have some Cutlass's. My Car Hauler "Big Daddy" has dragged all of my Olds home, it has an 8-ton wench. At 56 I am slowing down especially after snapping my ankle last Sept 30. I am done looking for anymore Olds, I have enough for a couple of lifetimes. I want to get my new engine together for my race car (78 Cutlass, caged/Ford 9") The broken ankle made me realize I better do what I want to do now while I am healthy. I was planning on building a 4th building for my Olds this Spring but I cancelled that idea. My days of building and climbing are over. Good Luck with your Oldsmobiles, Ken

My name is Dan, age 54 from S.C. Military S.C.N.G. 1972-1978,driver/gunner155 S.P. Howitzer. 1972-Present Chemical lab tech. Car stuff: Dad ran own body shop 1940's-1960's.Looked over his shoulder a lot! (Never could learn to weld but can lead.) Previous auto restorations:1930 A Model,1950 Merc.,1966 Nova S.S.,1965 Mustang 2+2. Now have a 1975 Delta 88 Royale Conv. The Delta is my 2ond. experience with rag tops.My wife always wanted a Cutlass and I a big ol parade boat.The Delta was to be the best of both worlds.Lots of good info on this forum , you just have to dig it out.I had previous posts on scissor tops and conv. top parts suppliers. Hope this helped someone. The parts # manuals on CD are a great deal as they are scanned in from the original books and they are cheap. I think we could start an editorial thread as I am sure some of us have a lot more to say about "The Auctions" and the way the whole collector market is going. Later |

New 'Olds' Nut too!
Dave here, from Spokane Washington. Currently site lead (manager) for Boeing at Fairchild AFB. Performing a safety mod on the KC-135 tankers. Just retired in January from Air National Guard as a fulltime (Civil Service), and military member. Whew! 28 years later. Had 7 years Air Force also. Background was structures and non-destructive inspection, retired as a Chief. Been good to me over the years. Looked for over a year for the 'right' ragtop. No specific brand, just something 60's with a full back seat. A month ago I came across 67' Delta 88 vert' for sale on Craigslist. Turned out to be just what I was looking for. Daily driver catagory bit still a looker, and a bargain too! Trailered her home to Spokaloo last week and have been enjoying it ever since. I've always been a Chevy guy (too many to list), daily driver an '02 Avalanche. My auto background comes from good genes. My dad helped to build the largest private auto collection in the world, www.lemaymuseum.org so you can say its in my blood. I'm looking forward to many great hours top down (or up) with my bride in my arms and my little girl (9) happily singing in the back.

What I do
Hi there guys, and gals. I teach and coach for a living in Western KY. My dad bought a brand new '65 442 when I was 4 years old. I found an original one a few years ago in Franklin Tn and am restoring very slowly. My dad was a weekend drag racer 'til I was born, so I got the car bug from him. He and I restored a few cars, '67 Galaxie 500 289 2dr hdtp, 68 & 70 El Camino's, '64 Vette Rdst, '56 Nomad. I have two friends here that build street rods and we all help each other, each with their own expertise. Have fun, Stacey

I work maintenence at a high school for 15 years. This is how I aquired my 70 Cutlass. A kid wrecked it and it sat at our auto shop and I bought it from them for a mere 250.00
Worked on cars of my own for many years. I restored my 70 last year and am now restoring my baby - 70 RT Charger. After that I am gonna tackle the 68 vert. |

i spent 24 years in the US Army as a Senior Helicopter Repairer, i have Exp in 442's being my first car was a 66 442 ( new right out of the showroom ) since then i have owned 68 442 70 442 W-30 71 442 and 73 442 ) today i own a 67 442 post coupe which i completely restored back to original condition this is a matching number car..i have exp in all phases of restoration on the 442's... |

howdy,
i was a construction superintendent untill the bottom fell out of the housing market last year so now im a bartender fun job lot less money, but lot less stress, a long time ago my dad gave me a 69 olds 98 2door for a wedding present and i loved it, power everything, 455 and white leather interior. my wife made me sell it and i divorced her a year later after she made me sell my 79 jeep j-20 i still cant stand that woman lol. anyway i just bought a 1952 rocket 88 4 door and i cant wait to get started on it! i also own a 65 dodge dart GT and a 66 plymouth valiant v-100 wagon so i do like me the old cars. they just have more CLASS than the imports of today.cant wait to talk at you kids more!!! |
