Any thoughts on W40 ?

Here are some photos from a 72' Cutlass Supreme .
Does anyone have an idea of the option on a W40?
Number are located between the hinges on driver side, and the W40 in second photo is next to the dash on both sides. When people have asked what were the options on their car was I have responded to look in these locations on the car, but no one has responded to these locations.

Body codes?

I was looking at my car in those places and I found only this code next to the dash:
10587 W10

This looks like some kind of code - does anyone know what it means?
W10 (nor W40) could be found in the RPO list, so maybe it is not an option code.
It probably means SOMETHING, but what???
Perhaps a series or style code used by Fisher???

I could not find much between the door hinges as my door is installed and it is difficult to see there (but it looks like there is something there.)

I never even knew about these codes until I saw this post. Most people really mean to look at the riveted tag on the upper left firewall under the hood. Of course in 72, there is not a lot of option info there even...

Maybe those numbers have nothing to do with options.

That is currently our thoughts but we are still wondering what the codes are and maybe what they mean...

Everyone check you Cutlass in this area and post the info here. It will be interesting to see how many different combinations of the numbers we get. I will look on the 70 Cutlass I have and post it this weekend.

Thanks.

just for the record, a W-40 is a 1990 or 1991 Quad 442. the standard Quad 442 with gold stripes.

Not a W car

My car is a 1972 Cutlass S. I checked the pillar locations like you showed and the numbers are 0539 W12. Doesn't appear to be consistent as a part number because I think this is a standard piece. It must have something to do production??? I thought W12 might be related to Week 12 of 1972. But then I checked my broadcast sheet and confirmed my car was built on March 7, 1972. Orrr, does the manufacturing calendar work differently??? As far as the 0539, since it's something that appears different on all the cars but strangely on similar piece, maybe that's the employee number who pressed the part on that shift/week? I know I'm stretching here but you never know how they did things back then for "quality control". I'm open to suggestions too. Anyway, that's the number on my car and I don't have a W12 car Or, I'd have to really beef it up by 18 to be a W30!

Could just be a piece count for the day of manufacturing......Hard to say,I dont think its of any historic value tho......

that was 1990 quad442, the first year. it was a 2.3 HO motor. following year W-40 was dropped and then came the W-41.

It (W40) was also the option code for the '83 & '84 Hurst Olds.

in 1991 you could get both the W-40 or W-41. there were only 204 of the W-41s

C'mon now guys.
Now we're discussing 4 cylinder cars in here...lol

My car, 1969 Cutlass Supreme
Stampings on my drivers side door pillar are 1807 W44
added to the list...

Much like this stamping, has anyone ever noticed the "OLDS" stamp on the rear of the car, right side, up under bumper location (probably impossible to see with bumper on though), just below the right tail-light location?
Mine has it.

Yes, there are a lot of "odd" stamps on body pieces. My '66 442 has "Olds" stamped in the floor by the jack hold down.
Part numbers, revision codes, date/shift codes and such. Yes, it may be interesting to actually identify what the numbers are. But as BIGJER says, they really won't have any significance to documenting anything.
