My husband's first car was an Olds 98. He didn't keep it very long because it was lavender. He remembers that the gas flap was in the taillight fins and he lifted it to put gas in it. He also thinks the exhaust pipes came out in the bumper. I would like to find out what year this car was so I might be able to find one for him to restore. thanks

Sounds like maybe a '77 or '78. I owned a '76 but the fuel inlet was behind the license plate. Come to think of it, I can't recall any Olds that was like that. Why don't you just ask him sometime "by the way, what year was that Oldsmobile you owned"? About the tailpipes, I don't think any of the big cars has bumper cutouts for them. The Cutlass series cars did though. Good luck.

That's what he can't remember but he thinks it may have been a 1957. We've seen 58's and 59's at car shows but we have not seen a 57 in person. I've looked at Internet pictures but I'm still unsure. Thanks for the fast reply. Jeane

Oh, ok then, I have to apologize because I wasn't thinking back far enough. It is entirely possible if you are talking the late fifties. I especially like the '58 model but a lot of people don't. This website has some knowledgeable people about the older Oldsmobiles but unfortunately they don't get on here too often. But, good luck.

I think the car you want is a '56. The Chevy that year also had the filler behind a taillight. Good luck finding one.

You are looking for a 1957 Super 88 or 98. Both have the exhaust through bumper and the gas filler is below the left taillight under a chrome covered panel. The 98 is a longer wheelbase/trunk area

GM used a lot of hidden gas doors in 56 thru 58 Pontiac under back up light, 58 Olds under tail light under chrome , 58 Cad under tail light. My first job in early 1960's was pumping gas I still remember the first time when new car came in finding the gas door or hood opening lever. most I still remember.Try and find a gas station that pumps it for you and checks oil and washes windows.

Hey guys, this thread is over a year old and I don't think she is even a regular here at all. But, I guess it is a good general purpose subject for discussion anyway. Oh, and welcome to our site sandy. Go introduce yourself and tell us a little about your Oldsmobiles. We have a thread in the top general announcement forum.
