61 olds vaccuum diagrams?
i havent been posting much just absorbing alot of info. but i was wandering if anyone has any info or could point me in the right direction. i've already purchased an origional shop manual but it didnt have the info i needed. i'm looking for a vaccum diagram for my 61 olds dynamic88. i think i'm missing a line going to my trans and hopefully that will solve my trans problems. thanks in advance for your help.

Are you referring to a vacuum modulator? The Roto-Hydramatic (or Slim-Jim) doesn't have one. There is no direct vacuum input to the trans on these cars. There is a mechanical link (TV rod) that runs from the carb linkage down to the trans on the driver's side that plays an important role in both down & upshifts. In spite of it's appearance, it is exquisitely sensitive to adjustment. Read the appropriate sections of your manual thoroughly & try fiddling with the adjustment. Make sure you keep track of how many time you rotate the attaching yoke as you bring the TV rod in or out, that way you can always adjust it back to where you started. What sort of problems are you having?

thanks for the input. well when i put the car in gear it stalls out, now i'm used to working on classic chevy's and that symptom usually points to a vaccum leak. also on the passenger side of the engine compartment there is a metal tube that comes up from under the car with a small canister on it and then it sort of hooks down and it looks like a vaccum line of some sorts. any idea what that is?

Starfire61 is right, there is no vacuum connection on these transmissions. He's also right that they are extremely sensitive to TV adjustment as well as fluid level. What Starfire61 didn't mention is that these transmissions aren't the best. Maybe what you're perceiving as a problem is actually the nature of the beast.
I read in one of your other posts that you are a parts counterman - so am I. GM? or something else? Paul |

That pipe you are talking about is the transmission vent. That canister looking thing is to collect any fluid that might be pushed out the vent so that it can be returned to the transmission.
Can't say why she stalls when put in gear. Paul |

Yeah, the Slim-Jim wasn't exactly one of GM's high points, but the problem you're describing sounds more like a carb issue or perhaps another vacuum problem. Assuming your timing is set right make sure the vacuum advance is working. I had a bad diaphragm in a vacuum advance once & had both a big vacuum leak & lousy performance. Drove myself nuts trying to figure it out. I'd also go through the carb & make sure the floats & other adjustments are set right. Is this a 2-bbl engine?

yep, it's a 2bbl. i just had a local resto. shop rebuild it for me. the problem was there before i had that done. i also just replaced my b/b becuase there was a leak in that, so i'm planning on replacing all of my vaccum lines.
