You don't. I've seen threads resurrected weeks, months, or even years later for follow-up questions or somebody needing info on the same thing.

One thing I like to see (ATTENTION: OPINION APPROACHING AT LIGHT SPEED!) is when someone will add a post saying what fixed the problem.

If it's a wanted or for sale item, just add a post that says you got one or sold it or whatever.
