Hello all. I am very new to the classic cars but I really enjoy it. I have a 1957 Oldsmobile 98. I just got the motor pulled and its the 371 rocket that is locked up. Should I rebuild the motor or just put a 350 in it ? Thank for and help

I knew you would find some more "57 owners here. Cool.
I would say rebuild the 371 as there are sources for engine parts.

Always enjoyed the 57 Olds--best friend had one back in school. Got lots of raves when riding in it--great car to restore. Are you doing all the work yourself? Post pictures of your progress.

I have a good friend of mine that is helping me along the way. He has redone about 25 cars and really knows his stuff so that is a major help. I will post pics along the way and I look forward the days I get off work and can play in the garage

Hi belgium57olds,

Yes, it´s true, the car was in CHROM&FLAMMEN 3/99.
No, I don´t have the drivetrain anymore. I sold it some years ago, when I switched to a Chevy 350/350 combo.
I really love your cars !!!! Thats really a dream of me, to have all 3 model styles !!!! Keep them up.

I say keep the 371! It was called the J-2 Rocket and it had a six pack, putting out like 312 HP... how can you go wrong with something that cool? I think one of the coolest things about clasic oldsmobiles was the engines, they were all unique and cutting edge for their time, it's just my opinion that dropping a Chevy 350 in it ruins a car like that, and I also think we see way too much of that these days.
Putting in a different/better classic oldsmobile motor like a 425 or whatever would be one thing, and people used to do that back in the day (an old teacher had a 1949 Olds 88 with a hopped up olds 394 back in the 60's, one of the fastest cars in town) so it would still be a "period correct" thing but I think 350's are too generic and boring. You can put a 350 in anything, but a classic Olds with a real-deal Olds motor is something special!
That's just my two cents

You are right, your cars do look like diamonds. I admire that they are in such fine condition. Welcome to the Forum.

My vote is keep the 371 Olds engine. It is well worth restoring/rebuilding. IMHO there is no substitute for the 371. I restored a 69 Chevy some years ago and replaced it's 327 with a new 350 and regretted that move to this day. 350's are geared lower and did not have nearly the pep of the 327 - nor will it have compared to the 371 fully reconditioned.

Thumbs up

Hi & welcome to CO!

I see croozer already answered. There are several other German/European members, wouldn't be surprised if some answer!
For instance, there are 3 '63 Cutlass 'verts (convertible 63 is from the black forest, 2 are in Switzerland), a '68 Cutlass 'vert, etc.
Croozer has "volunteered" to try to get an email list together.
Enjoy the site!
