Hi, I'm a Ford guy and have some Question on a 70 Cutlass

The owner which is 85yr young needed a new motor. The put a 403 out of a another car. He ended up blowing this one up also. I cleaned up the motor compartment. I sanded and painted the motor compartment and replace pretty much all the wiring in the motor compartment. It has a rebuilt 350 in it. I just wanted to post the progress picture before I ask my question.

Here is the motor compartment sanded primed and painted in Imron black

Here is the motor compartment

Here is the motor that's going in. It will have chrome valve covers.

Well it's done and running. Well not a 100% done. When I started it up, I found the power steering pump leaks pressure hose has a hole in it. Plus i think the water pump pully is the wrong one. The one belt doesn't like up right.

Nice work, Oldsmobiles had three water pumps with different shaft lengths depending on the options of the car. AC cars had different pully sets and water pumps then cars without AC. You need to use a matched set to get things to line up. Perhaps you can use the set from the 403.

Sounds like the owner is young at heart and really loves his Olds.

Ask your questions we're ready. Good luck

Well I took the pulley's off the 403 crank and water pump and put it on the new motor but I don't know if they were on the first 350 or came with the 403. This car had AC but it's not on there now. I took some other picture of the pulley's.

It looks like if the water pump pulley didn't have the gap between the first to grooves then the belt would aline up prefect.

Let me look at that again, it appears that the the water pump pully lines up with the crank pully. I don't see a picture of the alternator, how does it line up with the other pullys

Then I think the problem is you are missing the power steering pump spacers. Both mounting points use spacers each is of a different thickness, they are used to aligne the pump with the other pullys. I'll measure mine on my 455 and get back to you.

The top spacer is about 3/8", the lower spacer is about 3/4". If you don't have the spacers you can make them by stacking nuts or washers or use a combination of both. that will correct the power steering pump alignment.

Actually, the spacers aren't "top" and "bottom". The smaller spacer goes between the bracket and the front cover stud at the bottom of the front cover. The larger spacer goes between the bracket and the block at the rear bottom location below the exhaust manifold.

It looks lke the alternator belt is on the wrong fan/water pump pulley groove? Shouldn't the belt be on the back groove of the water pump pulley?
On my '71 the furthest forward or toward the front of the car groove is for the A/C compressor belt on the crank and fan pulleys.
The power steering pump belt goes to the middle crank and fan pulley groove and the rear PS pump pulley groove carries the alternator belt.
