69 Olds 455 engine

Hello everyone.

I am new to this site. I was wondering when someone states a 3 or 4 speed motor are they referring to the engine itself or does manual or auto only have somthing to do with the transmission.

I found a 69 455, but it's a 4 speed, and I have an automatic Cutty. Did'n t know if 4 speed engine refers to manual or auto

I am currently in search of a 68-70 455 for my 1972 Cutlass S, which currently has the 160hp 350, which to me is boring. Not looking for a racing engine, but would like to move it out, just in case an Far East Moped attempts to pull on me.

Any help would be great

Well it has to do with both the engine and the trans. Unlike other manufacturers Oldsmobile didn't automatically drill the crank for a pilot bearing when they made it. They only did it if the engine was going into a stick car. So being that the engine you are looking at is in a car with a 4 speed it is drilled for it. That "can" make it more desirable than a non drilled crank. If you are going to rebuild the engine then I would suggest selling that crank and getting another one if you are going to use an automatic in your car.

Thanks for the info Boss

So I would have to get a crank for an automatic to make this work. Is there any thing else I would have to do to complete this set-up? Will any crank do or should I look for a certain application?

Thanks

You don't have to swap the crank to make it work. It would work just fine with a flex plate. It's just that there are guys out there that want a "stick" crank and it's much easier to get one that is already set up then it would be to have it drilled out to accept the pilot bearing.

All you need is another 455 crank. Those should be easy enough to find.
