Forum N00b, still shopping for a project.

Hello all. I'm an Olds fan from way back (Dad is a retired Olds guy). Haven't owned one for years, so right now I am shopping for a project car.

I found a 1967 that appears to be a real 442. I'm hoping someone wouldn't mind helping decode the accesory codes on the data plate. It's clear this is a Lansing Holiday Coupe with a V8. Looks to be gold with black vinyl top and black bucket seat interior.

Based on other posts I've read, the E in column 1 denotes tinted windows. Column 2 reads EGR. It seems the R is for the rear speaker, but I'm not sure about the E or G. I think the G might be brackets for the automatic floor shifter. Any help is appreciated.

Welcome to CO, help should be forthcoming as we have more than a few that are very capable at doing this.

You're on the right track! E is for your vinyl top, and G is for a console. So it is a console automatic, I presume.
And the column 5 V is for the 442 trim, of course.

Yes, that seems to be the case. Thanks for the help! I haven't yet seen the car in person. It was posted on CL. The car is in Oklahoma but the owner is in Seattle. I guess his folks want it out of their way. I've been exchanging Emails with the owner.

I could use some opinions on whether this is a good candidate. My initial reaction, since it's verifiable that it's a 442, is go for it. But here's the scoop:

Complete car but pretty much a basket case. Original engine gone, replaced with an E-head 455. Supposedly has original automatic and differential. (I assume it has a Jetaway?). It's missing the A/C compressor and hoses, but the condenser and the parts on the firewall are still there. Owner says the interior is all apart but is complete. I would assume it's missing some odds and ends but nothing big. Owner says it needs floors but everything else is pretty solid. Again, I still need to go inspect in person to know exactly what the situation is.

He's including a 4-door parts car in the sale. The front clip from the parts car is already on the 442. In the pics the clip looks straight. He does have the original clip, including the hood and grill bar. The parts car is said to have a complete interior and A/C as well, so it should have many of the missing parts. He also mentioned having a 330 and a TH400 included with the sale, but I don't know if he meant to imply they are in the parts car or are separate. I can't imagine the 4-door would have a TH400.

With all that said, I'm not sure whether to bother or what to offer. He is asking $1,700. A friend suggested offering $1,000 and give no more than $1,200. Would like some opinions from folks who know the Olds market.

As for my goals with the car... this will be a long-term project. I am in no hurry. The idea is to learn various restoration skills and do as much as possible myself. I want to restore it mostly original with minor improvements. It needs to run strong but be able to run power brakes and A/C and cruise all day in 100-degree Oklahoma weather. So, basically a cruiser but with enough guts not to embarrass myself at test and tune night.

For a 67 that has floor pans with cancer and nowhere else, parts car to boot, thats not to far out of line. Then again, it is not what he thinks its worth but what you are willing to pay. I believe your friend probably has the number, but I would pay a couple of hundred more for my dream car.

The original trans in '67 would be a Turbo 400, not the Jetaway, and that is a good thing. Rear could be a 10-bolt P type, or a 10 bolt (12 bolt cover) O type. Probably milder (3.23) gears with the auto.
According to the data plate, that car did *not* come with AC, and as a personal preference, I would dump the AC parts. But there is no reason you can't have the AC.
I'd take a very close look for condition. "Needs floors but everything else is pretty solid" tell me to look further, and that is seldom the case. Maybe need "drivers floor" and the rest is solid, but.......
Check the frame very carefully. Door bottoms? Quarter bottoms?

"He does have the original clip, including the hood and grill bar."
Grill bar is no big deal, but the hood is! Very hard to come by a good one.

For sure!

I like your friend's suggestion. Especially if it already has the 400 trans, an O rear, and is respectably solid. And comes with the parts car.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks for the input. The fact that the owner is saying it has air but it's not a "real" air car bugs me. I guess I just need to go look at it before spending much more time thinking about it. It might be possible to part it and make some money, but I just hate to part out a 442 if it can be saved.
