I bought the "pile of junk" in 2002 and finally getting closer with 3 kids and too much going on. You know the routine - more work than I thought as I did a 70 SS396 Chevelle before but it was a southern car. This was rusty northern and I had to replace floors, trunk floors, quarters, left rocker, repaired right rocker, front body mounts (torque boxes?). Then when I took the body off the frame, had to repair most of the mount holes with washers welded in (rusted oversize), re-did all cage nuts (not one body mount bolt came out without cutting even after soaking with oil), rear spring perches and rearmost crossmember on frame (got them from a junkyard out West). All in all, I finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. I would never do such a deteriorated car again (really needed to be re-bodied!!) but am proud I did most of it myself except for paint and I let the body guy repair the lower windshield channel. I bought the cheap wirefeed welder (flux-core - should have gotten gas mig though) and a bunch of cut-off tools for cutting out floors, etc. The repro Goodmark 1/4's fit well actually along with wheelhouses, etc. Body shop did a great job - one spot needs to be touched up on the door (neither he nor I noticed the imperfection until I got it home). He is going to take care of it after it is together.

I am hoping to be done this summer. It is Sherwood green with green interior - only thing is I should have done interior in white for a nice contrast but I already bought the green interior kit 5 years ago. Everyone asks why I did not paint it another color, but I already have the red Chevelle SS396 (1970) and I think the dark green looks good and you don't see too many of the oddball colors at car shows.

I am adding power windows and tilt wheel I got from a junkyard car and adding a dualgate to the factory console/bucket interior. Car is factory gauge car but someone stole the tach and put in a factory clock.

Nice! Tons of work but with only 793 made it's worth it.

 

11 Years later. Finally done with my 70SX Conv. It takes a long time when you have 3 kids and work to keep you busy. Went back to original green. Car was white when I bought it and badged as a 442, but I found it was originally an SX.

Excellent job!! What a great idea to have the kids in the before and after photos! It really drives home how much time it takes to do a restoration like this. You should be very proud of your hard work.

Very nice Pete. A lot of work in this project. I had one cage nut break loose on mine. I cannot imagine dealing with all of them. What a great looking car. You should be very proud.

That original picture was by chance when I told my wife I should get the kids in the photo and then take one 3 years later when it is done. Of course the family road me about the 3 years turning into 11.

Also, I only found that photo because my wife reminded me it was taken with a film camera and was in a shoebox. I was looking on the hard drive. Technology moves on.

Now it is time to sell some spare parts from the restoration. Anyone interested in an Olds V8 specifically made engine stand? Two pieces with casters. One bolts to each side of engine at engine mount area.

what did you use for the door braces ( the blue )

 

I made them. A plate on one end to upper door hinge. 1 inche square tube welded in between and plate on other end to door striker and the top part by striker, I clamped to upper door jamb.


I probably still have them if you wanted to use them.

I am looking for pics or measurements for door edge guards. 70 SX convertible with lower supreme horizontal chrome trim. I bought fusick repro door edge guards and want to know how low to install. I.e. is the bottom of door edge guard even with the top of this supreme molding or does it go part way down on this molding?
