68 Sport Steering Wheel Restoration
68 Sport Steering Wheel Restoration
I know there's a good thread somewhere here for a 68 sport wheel restoration but I can't find it. The search function doesn't allow "68" because it's too short and when I search any other combination I get tons of garbage. I think it may have been part of someone's 68 442 restoration thread in "major builds and projects" but I couldn't find it there either.
If no one can find it perhaps someone can chime in on what they did. I know I'll probably never be able replicate that "swirl" that the original plastic had but I'd like to see what other people used to fill the cracks. The plastic seems a lot softer than the standard wheel so I'm thnking something like bondo or JB Weld might not be a great choice. I know there are steering wheel repair kits and if those are the best alternative let me know. I'd also like to know what you used for paint (maybe getting some of the "swirl" back).

Eddie Hansen did a nice write up of how he restored a faux wood sport wheel here...

..BUT, his pics no longer work.... BUT, you can find small cached copies of some pics if you Google/Images his email addy & "steering wheel"...
He used PC-7 epoxy tinted with PC's Earth Tone pigments...

I also have a ratty '68 sport wheel in need of resto, so if you find a nice tutorial, please post it up !

I repaired my wheel a couple of weeks ago. I used a mixture of Eddie Hanson's thread and this one:

I used the PC Super Epoxy. In hindsight I should have ordered the tinting material and colored it brown to get it close. The PC Super is pure white and, as I found out, it shows through when you wet sand too far.
Here's the thread on oldsrocketperformance.com that I wrote up. I still haven't gotten any pics of the completed wheel. I didn't take my time at all and it came out pretty good.
