1968 cutlass dash restoring also gauge pods

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knows of someone who restores these dash pads and what they charge? I have gotten a few quotes and they seem a bit high one was for 900. Also I was wondering what color were the pods painted? Mine has worn away and blinds me. I'm thinking it was a flat black. Thanks

John

This one seems to be the most popular but they aren't cheap from what I hear.

The Parts Place makes a plastic cover that probably the best looking, cheapest alternative to having your dash redone. I never seen one in person but for $99 it's hard not to try it. They have both an Non/AC & AC version.

What do you mean by your pods are worn away and they blind you?

The paint has worn off and the chrome blinds me and that's why I wanted to know what the factory would of used if it's a semi or flat black. I'm thinking flat but not 100 percent sure.

Didn't know that could happen. Mine look satin, maybe semi-gloss, definitely not flat.

I was wondering what type of foam would I want to use to re do my dash pad? I'm in the process of stripping down the old foam as I'd like to get the old stuff off as I'm sure it's been breaking down and all that. I have seen some people use right stuff. Also what's the best way to shape the foam? The main reason I wanted to take all the old stuff was that some of the shops I had gone to didn't want to take it off as they were afraid of cracks or holes. Thanks

Before you go to all that trouble consider running a "Parts Wanted" ad for a nice clean used dashpad sourced from the northern part of the US. You can paint/dye it and it'll look excellent. By the time you do all the stuff you are thinking of you may be able to find a great used one to work with.....and it'll have the original grain/look to it.
