68 sport wheel question

OK, I put the new hub on my steering column for the sport wheel, using the large nut that is on the spindle in the center of the column. Is there anything else to secure this, or is that all?

Second, are the screws that come with the wheel/kit the only thing that connects the wheel to the hub? In other words, this seems slightly odd, as I now don't see the need for a steering wheel removal tool--nothing really is locked down or in. Is this correct, or did I remove my original style wheel and misplace some long bolts?

It's been awhile since it was removed, hence why I'm asking.

So you mean to tell me that no one here has installed a sport wheel on a 68-69? Heck, I'm guessing even the 70 wheel is similar.

I think you are correct here. Once the hub is connected with the large nut that threads onto the column shaft, the wheel connects to the hub with three screws (If there are three than I think you are good to go). The puller is normally used to pull the wheel off the steering shaft. In this case, it is the hub only that may get stuck.

Yes, I agree with you guys. The hub needs to be removed with a puller, but the sport wheel attaches to the hub with I believe 6 screws, then the horn contact attaches with 3 screws. I've got some photos of a 1970 sport wheel which attaches in a similar manner. If you have any questions about the horn contact let me know. John

When I was going to college in the Boston area, I had my 67 Cutlass beater stolen, forcing me to drive my 68 442. With practice, I was able to remove the sport steering wheel in under 90 seconds by undoing the horn ring and six phillips screws and would take the wheel with me to my dorm room. This definitely stopped the theft attempts.

The shaft is tapered, that's why you need a puller to get it off...

Ah, ok. Thanks guys. That makes sense. The hub is what will eventually need the puller.
