'72 442 questions

In 1972 was the base 350 offered for the 442 2bbl or 4bbl? I thought it was the 2bbl version. Didn't the 350's come with the turbo hydromatic 350 when ordered with the auto? Looking for clarification in order to back a response that I am about to submit to a mag, just want to be positively sure. Thanks.

Think of it this way: The 442 was an option available in combination with any engine and transmission option.

From what I remember, the Supreme came standard with the 350 4bbl and 350 tranny. A 2bbl version was a negative cost option.

The rest of the Cutlii came with the 350 2bbl as standard.

The W29 442 appearance / handling pkg was available with any engine and tranny option. This was a 72 only thing... The W30 option of course only came with the potent 455 and 400 tranny and included the W29 also.

The 4-4-2 package was basically a trim and handling package for 1972, so the base engine was the 350v2. I have heard these cars did not receive the notched bumpers, although it seems so strange because that's a part of the 4-4-2 identity in my eyes. However, to Rob's point, I take issue that the W-30 was only available with the TH400 tranny, as the 4-speed was the other available transmission. Of course, the dual-disc clutch was an option for the stick.

I know that the 442 was downgraded to an option (W29) in '72, and that the 350 was the base engine, just trying to clarify what carb was standard on it the 2 or 4bbl. I had a '76 L82 vette that when equipped with the auto, got the turbo 400 trans. so, I thought that might be a possibility in '72 even though downgraded, it was still a performance vehicle.

When equipped with the performance motors, the 4-4-2 was the equal of previous years aside of the compression reduction.

The base engine on the Cutlass and Cutlass S was the 2 bbl., and on the Cutlass Supreme was the 4-bbl. So just adding the 442 option got you the same base engines.
As previously said, the 442 option had nothing to do with the engine (short of the W30).
