Hi, guys I have a 72 cutlass w/455 bored .40 over, L2323 pistons,big vavle C Heads,comp cam 280H cam .480 intake -.480 exh. (.280 duration ) Do I need headers or will the original 455 dual exhaust work
with this setup. ..........thanks in advance for any and all help....

 

It all depends on what you want out of the car. I'm guessing you have the W/Z manifolds. They flow well for a stock manifold.
Headers do have benefits for sure, but you don't need them.

 

Thanks alot, Randy, I'm not racing or anything, I just want a little more power, It looks like the header installation is a real task, just wondering it the benefits are worth it ???.

 

Putting the headers on is usaully easyer than getting your old manifolds off.........Power gains are pretty good going from a restrictive stock manifold system to the free flowing set of headers...........


If you go to headers I can give you a few tpis to make it a smooth process.............Jerr

 

I'd like those tips also, I've got my headers, H-pipe, and mufflers together, just need to paint headers for rust-block.

Sorry for the delay........I'Am sure others can add some pointers also but the first one is dont try to put the P/S header on with the oil filter pick up on.......Set the header up in postion then reach up and bolt the oil filter pick up housing on,Not easy but makes it a smoooth deal to get the header up and in place,Your brake proportion valve might have to be moved......Some headers hit it some dont,I made a new bracket and just moved it up away from the header(Hooker 1 7/8 need the valve moved) If you go with a off brand with the 1 3/4 tubes it should be all right,The bolts are sometimes a biootch but doable,Get them ALL started then tighten them down from the outside in,I have some regular bolts and some header bolts with the 7/16 heads for the tight spots.......I soak my gaskets in water over night so they swell up some and seal good I have had good luck with this even tho it seems weird,DO NOT use stock exhust manifold gaskets,You need true header gaskets ,make sure all your speedo,Ebrake,gas lines and cables are up away from the headers so nothing gets melted.................Jerr

 

Which is the best gasket set? I seem to remember someone mentioning Remflex or something similar to that. Can't find the post, but are these familiar to anyone?

What are the header options for a 72 Cutlass Supreme convertible? Currently it has 350 ci from a 69 Cutlass with No. 5 heads on it. Sometime when money allows I would like to find a 455 for it.
