Why did you choose an Oldsmobile?

What is it that made you choose an Oldsmobile as your favorite type of car?

I wanted solid 64-67 Abody converible to build. The olds was the first one I found in the condition I wanted and $ I was going to spend. I would like it just as much if it was a Lemans or a Chevelle.

I wouldn't say Oldsmobile is my favorite but I know why I bought my 1961 Olds. It is not your typical 1961 Impala and it looks much better.

Having owned 3 BMW's,to be truthful,Olds are only my favourite AMERICAN car! Some things are just Classics: the Mona Lisa, Marilyn Munroe and the lines of the 60's and 70's 442 muscle cars!!!

442 was my 1st car ever owned, my dad had an older Cutlass before that and another even older Cutlass before that when I was littler, plus my mom had a woodie Olds wagon and then a white Firenza wagon and by the time I got my 86 442 I was flat out hooked on that car and the Oldsmobile name. Plus, when I used to play with Hot Wheels and matchbox when I was little, I had a red Olds Cutlass 1970 that just flat out won all the races I used to have with those little cars. Just thought it was cooler than the rest, and this is when I was a little kid.

My dad bought a '66 F-85 with a 330-4 and the jetaway trans - it was red on red and it was hot, and I just got my driver's license. Then, dad put chrome reverse wheels on that car with spinners and I was sold. My brother and I added an 4-track and dad installed a rear speaker fader control on the dash where the F-85 emblem was (my brother still has that F-85 emblem). That bench seat made for many a fun night at the beach with the girlfriends. Then, dad bought the '68 4-4-2 convertible you see to the left of this post - that's me waxing it on my 18th birthday in March 1969 and I have that car to this day (see the white one below, bench seat, too!). My first car was a '69 442 hardtop (the brown one with the hood strips) that I owned for 9 years. And my brother has the blue '68. How could one not like Oldsmobiles after those impressionable introductions during one's teen years?!!!!!

They are great cars! As many of you have pointed out, they are not as common as other makes which, to me, adds to their beauty. I fell in love with them as ateenager too.

Unlike a lot of Olds guys (of both sexes), I didn't have an Oldsmobile background.
In '75, I was looking for a car, and I wanted a musclecar (this was really before they were known as musclecars). I looked at many makes and models, being partial to mid-'60s GM A-bodies.
When I came across my '66 442, I thought that it was quite cool, and something a little different. Bought it for $600.00 without hesitation. That was the beginning for me.

I did not actually pick Oldsmobile either - I was a Chevy guy, but my Olds was bought new by my Mother and I bought it from her when I was in high school - my Dad worked at Oldsmobile also!!

My Olds came to me. Our battery guy found out I was into cars and had some Chevelle stuff I was selling and before I knew it he was buying Chevelle stuff and a year later I bought my 65 Cutlass from him.
He bugged me for a year and when I finally said yes he sold it to someone else but it fell through. If I can ever figure out how to scan pictures and be able to post them. I'll dig up the parents ol' 65 Vista Cruiser. I was not happy little boy when they bought that car because it meant they traded in the Chevy II wagon I loved. (they say I cried ). I got over it pretty quick with those cool skylights!

Way back when I was 15 and learning to drive my mother had said her 67 Cutlass (her and my dad bought it brand new and paid like $3400 back then) would be mine when I got my license.
Well in comes my stepfather (around 1982) and he decides to sell it to his neice for $400!! I was heart broken! The car was in mint condition with less than 30k miles on it and about 2 months later her boyfriend ran a stop sign with that car and got creamed by a newspaper delivery van!
When I was 18 and had some cash, my first car was a 72 Cutlass. Had a lot of fun with that car back then.
The car I'm working on now is what my mother's car looked like with the gold paint and black vinyl roof.
I love Oldsmobiles!

i spent a lot of time with my grandparents growing up in the 1970s. My grandpa was a Cutlass man but i remember a lot of their friends had Deltas and 98s. Not only do i just like Olds design, they remind me of my childhood.

The first one that grabbed me was the Red one in my profile. $500 in Jacksonville, NC. It was in the Base paper and I needed a ride to hit the bars. I looked the car over, when I slammed the trunk lid rust fell out from under the car. I looked at the seller and said, "Who is going to drive me to the bank?" Hour later, I was having cold long-neck looking at my new ride in the parking lot of Jerry's Tavern.

After I got married I told my wife I wanted an old car. I was thinking chevelle or camaro. She said no If you are going to get an old car I want it to be like my first car. 70 cutlass s. I found a 68 s and really enjoyed it. After awhile with kids had to sell it. wasn't driving it so I thought someone else should enjoy it. About a 2 years ago my wife came to me and said I miss the cutlass can we get another one but a convertible this time. I said we can look. Now have a 71 convertible. Been married almost 20 years to a great lady.

My folks said after I was born I came home from the hospital in a '52 Rocket 88. A few years later we all survived a crash with a Checker Cab in the same 88. The next Olds was my dad's '70 98 that I learned to drive in and I always dreamed of a 442 convertible of my own. Mom later had a '79 Cutlass Calais that was sweet, and I bought a '97 LSS for my wife. I finally found my '71 Cutlass SX (convertible) in a dusty Phoenix carport and got the guy to sell after a couple years of leaving notes on the windshield. I guess for us it was a family affair with Olds.

Leaving notes may sound futile to some, but we're here to tell them that it *can* work! That's how I got my '67 442. I left my (Oldsmobile) card on the dash of it about *2 years* before I bought it in 2003. I didn't even indicate that I wanted to buy it. I just thought the owner may want to talk Oldsmobiles. He never contacted me until 2 years later when he decided to sell it. He called me and said he found my card and asked if I was interested in buying it. The rest is another story, but you never know what will get the ball rolling!

I started hanging out at a friend's house who has owned over 60 olds cutlass/442's, vista cruiser's, & H/O during his life. When I first met him, I was driving a 55 Ford F100 pickup with a 351 Cleveland C6 transmission and a 9 inch Ford rear end. His passion for Oldsmobiles eventually rubbed off on me, and I bought my current car from a guy in Tuson, Az off the 442.com internet site 8 years ago. I have not regretted coming over to the dark side.

I also went home from the hospital in an 88 (55 I think) moved to Florida in an 88 (57 I think) my grandfather had a 60 Super 88 convertible, a 63 88 Holiday sedan, 67 Cutlass (I got caught driving that when I was 10), 72 88 Royale, 73 88 Royale, sister had 83 or so Ciera, 85 98, 86 Calais, Mom had 87 88 Royale, 92 Custom Cruiser (that sank in a field in heavy rain)

My Uncle had a 59 88 convertible, an aunt had a 69 Cutlass convertible.

My brother had a sweet 78 Cutlass Calais, I had a great 74 Cutlass Salon.



I am sure I am forgetting some.

I had so many mid 70s Oldsmobiles (when my Dad was a Cadillac dealer LOL) I can not even count them all.

My Toronado and 88 conv found me, then it was like "duh, no brainer" (I was looking for a boattail Riv at the time, what a mistake that would have been)

Back in 1986, my Stepdad was looking for a 1955 Buick roadmaster but it proved rather difficult to find. In our searching, we came across our 1958 Holiday 88. We thought it was a very unique and uncommon car and up until then, we hadn't ever seen one before. We bought it that night and we haven't looked back since...

It was a runner up until about 1997, when I took off for college and got a little too busy to give it the attention it deserves. Now, I'm going to give her the attention she deserves.

I bought the Alero in May 2000 6 months after havign a rental Alero in Vegas. Gotta love a 4 banger that was pushin 120 in the desert and still wanting more, in fact all week I thought it was a V6.

Bought the Delta and dropped a 350 Olds in it. I was nuts and it couldn't be done it all I heard. Oddly enough everybody shut up after I did the swap

My Olds was my first hot rod. I bought it in 1985 when I was 19. I wanted an old muscle car and started looking. The choices came down to two. The Cutlass Supreme that I ended up with, or a '69 SS 396 4-speed Chevelle. if I knew then what I know now of the classic car marketplace I would have chosen the other car.
Back then they were just old cars to beat on, and I liked the looks and style of the Oldsmobile better.

My neighbor had a 71 Cutlass Conv when I was a child and after looking at it for 18 had to have one. Had a 71 Cutlass hardtop in college and finally 3 years ago purchased a 72 Cutlass Conv. Oh yea and the Rocket motors.

A close family friend has a 72 w-29 convert. with 46k original miles. He's been taking me to car shows and cruise nights every week for almost 4 years. He's had the car since he was 16, in 1975. This kind of had a lot to do with it.

Besides, who wants to drive a chevelle anyways?

I love the lines. the hips on the 1/4s on the 70-72 cutlass' . I just dig em. When I got my first one I was a bit bummed out cuz it wasn't an actual 442 but now it doesn't matter.I'll never sell it.anyone elses value of it is irrelevant.
