Mark, welcome to our site. You will probably have ample opportunities to help members out with starting/charging problems.

Welcome Mark, new guru of all things to do with charging and starting.
I bet you could do some nice rebuild threads.
Pics are most appreciated here, who reads the articles?

I put a billion watt stereo in my car and after driving around and checking out the tunes it won't turn over and I smell plastic burning, is it the starter or the carburetor?

citcapp, I am not very computer savy so pic may be slow. I just got a computer at home 2 weeks ago and as I am raising 2 grandkids a boy 6 and a girl10 (the real reason i got the computer) my computer time and skills are limited. I am usually asleep before they are. I play a little at work when I get a min.
At first I thought there is no story for my olds, but I guess there is. A customer had it towed in for a starter replacement about 5 years ago. He had it up for sale and a potential buyer was test driving it when it was shut off and wouldn't start. Needless to say the buyer withdrew the $4000.00 offer. I removed the starter and the housing was broken. A common problem with the3800engine in that period. It is caused by hydrolock (water in the cylinders.) My customer was angry with his bad luck, bought a new buick, and three days later asked me if I would give $1200.00 for it. I did . I put another $1000.00 into it and tried to sell it for $3500.00. Lots of lookers - no takers. then $3000.00 same results. $2500.00 same $2300.00 same. so I kept it. My wife had a 1 year old sonata. a year later she said sell the sonata and keep the olds. Since then a number of peoople that looked at it when it was for sale now wanted to buy it. The last was the fellow I bought it from. He had his buick in for a battery replacement and begged me to sell him his olds back. No dice I still have it and it has been a great machine.

Jamesbo, Hillary Clinton was given one when she was here, and wouldn't eat it. Insulted the city and lost a lot of votes. I got a brother and 2 cousins in Atlanta. They keep asking why i'm still here. Mark

Bluevista I hope to help with the starting and charging problems. The burning plastic smell must be from friction on the 3 mile extension cord hanging out of your trunk.

Mark,

Your sense of humor fits right in here, I can tell you will be a long time member. I like the one about the extension cord.
