Fisher body

Since I'm on a roll here...

Historically, how did it work with GM having its own body division, Fisher body, with the production of the cars? Or was Fisher body even considered a "division" of GM?

Did each division ask Fisher to make the bodies for them at one factory, then send the bodies to a Olds or Chevrolet factory, where they then attached the frame, engine, and running gear?

I was thinking about how all of this worked when the cars were built.

I assume this must have changed when they started producing unibody cars. Or was "Body by Fisher" just a moniker, just a badge put on the car, harking back to the 1920s or so when you really had carriage-like bodies?

Not sure how it all worked, but the town that I grew up in had a Fisher Body plant. I seem to remember that the main sign said "Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac and Cadillac Division". Glad they didn't make the chebby parts there The plant closed up in the early 80s to be replaced with UPSs largest distribution in the world.
