please help

I was leaving church and when I turned on my car the dash lights, radio, break lights, head lights, power locks, power seat adjusyments didn't come on. My freind called her friend and he said it may be a fuse from the box under the hood. I can't find the box under my hood. I don'y know what im looking for, but if its a fuse, id like to think i can change it myself. if its not, do you have any guesses? are electrical problwms costly to fix (i would take it to a MECHANIC)?
also I checked the fuses inthe box on the dashboard and they are all fine)
