1953 automatic eye

I am building a 1953 88 and bought another 53 for fenders, etc. The parts car has an "automatic eye" which is supposed to dim the lights when a car approaches. Was thinking about putting the "eye" on my good car but then started wondering if there is a way to check the unit to see if it works . Also , whether anyone knows how to repair if it breaks . Is it worth the trouble to make the switch ? Would appreciate any advice . Thanks , John.
