Introduction & pics of my 64 Jetstar 88

Picked this up Saturday semi locally. has 83k original miles on it. has some body issues, but this will take a while to build for me anyway. I'm a lowrider at heart but all my builds are done right. Either way some of you may cringe at me bagging it. I wont be cutting anything on this one, leaving factory wheel wells in tact and either going to run 14" wires or an 18/20 combo.

Does anyone know if the spring mounts are the same on jetstar and the same year impala? meaning could you take springs from the impala and put them into the jetstar?

tossed the old hub caps that i had from my regal on it.

Nice pics of a nice car. That interior is beautiful. Do you plan a custom paint job or staying with the stock color? I think if you bag it and keep the same wheel openings the same 14's or 15's would look real nice. If you go with 20/18's you may need to make some room for them. Not sure about the spring interchange, Joe might know though. Welcome to CO.

I'm going to drive it(not until srping) with the paint the way it is, I like the worn look, most people seem to be calling it "patina"? Either way its cool. Once I get all the body panels straightened out then I will decide on paint.
I will do the 14" wires first with the body as is. Then I will work on bigger wheels later as I'm closer to paint. I will probably stay with a teal/blue type color, because the interior is just way to cool to change and the only other color that inyterior would look good with in my eyes would be black. I like black, but it just isn't for this car. Again, just my opinion.
Not sure about doing anything to the motor, I woulkd like to run some duals straight out the back, but would like to keep everything else stock, other than dressing it up some.

Cool car. I had one just like it from 1991 to 1996 before selling it. I don't know specifically about the springs, but you should be aware (if you aren't already) that the engine, drivetrain, and brakes on the Jetstar 88 (but not the Jetstar I) are the same as the F-85/Cutlasses of the same year. They were a "poor man's" 88 at the time, or a way for someone to get into a full-size Oldsmobile at a less than full-size price.

So as you look for parts for these systems, you're going to constantly come across "except for Jetstar 88" whenever you're looking at listings for '64 full-size Oldsmobiles.

Welcome bourbon

Nice score!

Great to hear that you're going to keep her stock. That the factory radio in the back seat? Speaking of back seats, that one looks like it's never been sat in. I bet that a really good shampoo and cleaning would make the front seat come alive again too. Dash looks immaculate. Overall this car looks like it's in fantastic condition. Glass looks good. Minor body work - is the rust just on the fender, or is the rocker gone there too? Ok that rear bumper needs help. I can't believe that all the bright parts are there and seem to show well. Can't wait to see how this turns out. Take lots of pics and keep updating the site.

yeah the rocker is gone on both fenders, the dr side one being worse. and both rear quarters imo need to be replaced, as well as both bumpers. the interior is in really good shape, the dash pad, armrests and steering wheel have the common cracks but that about it. it has 82xxx original miles and was last on the road legally in 1992.

I should qualify slightly what I said above. The "except for Jetstar 88" thing will happen as you look for engine, drivertrain, and brake parts. The frame and suspension should be the same as other full-size 88s of that year, so if the Impala parts would fit other '64 88s, they should fit the Jetstar.

I'm a little curious about this. From your photos, your front bumper doesn't look too bad at all and could just be re-chromed. Why do you want to replace it? On my '64 Jetstar, the front bumper looked like yours does, with no rust-through, and I just took it off and had it re-plated. The rear bumper, on the other hand, was a basket case (worse than yours looks) with rust-through in several places (and this was in 1991--your car is 18 years older now), and my only option was to get another one and have it re-chromed. I ended up buying one from California for about $100 plus shipping and then having it re-chromed for about $250. All together, getting a nice rear bumper on it cost almost $400, and that was in 1991. Probably need to at least double that today, unless you can find a good-enough one that doesn't need to be re-chromed.

Well I will be keeping it stock somewhat. I will be keeping the wheel wells in tact and not notching or cutting the frame or body in any way for the suspension. The last car I did was an 83 regal and I laid that out, hard. All new sheet metal in the trunk for tubbing and a bridge cover and flooring because of the suspension. I flipped the trunk because I had to remove the factory trunk hinges to clear the tubs for the 20's. So this one I won't be going radical like that, but I will still be bagging it and after market wheels etc.

Yes it is the factory radio I got the original window stick with the car as well. The interior is very nice for the year and love the look/feel of it so I won't be changing that up.

Thanks!

Wow. How cool is that! Imagine such a thing surviving for 45 years and not getting lost along the way. If you have the capability, it would be great if you could scan the sticker and post the picture. I'd love to see what one looks like.

ok no problem. it will take me a few days to get to it probably, but i will do it.

the guy I got it from seems like a decent guy, and really seemed to care for the car. so he kept everything he could from/for the car.

well i know the arms are different on the 88's compared to the impalas. but spring width should be simular, if not i will just make my own brackets and such. i can return the impala brackets if they dont work.

the front bumper i may be able to save, but rechroming isnt an option really for me anymore, with the epa and such cracking down on chroming places for enviromental reasons , everything has gone through the roof pricing wise. i am seeing prices $700+ for bumper rechroming. i dont want them perfect, but the back bumper has holes in it that metal was riveted over and painted with what looks like chrome in a can. i will probably end up going with a hot rod flatz teal color with some striping so i could even get away with body matched bumpers i think. so we will see. im pretty far off from that point though.

Welcome to the forum. A great find and make it they way you want. Nothing wrong in keeping a stock look and nothing wrong in slamin it if it makes you happy. Sorry I can't answer your question about springs as the Newbie Forum is not the best place to get your questions answered but $1100 for a set of headers is WAY too expensive.

Most excellent find brother! Original colour's fine, but an icy-cold white,or any deep dark blue would also look great IMHO....Derek

Thanks! I love those old documents. I like how the "engine number" is on the bill of sale. When did they stop doing that? What was the point of including it?

It's also interesting that, even as late as 1964, something as seemingly as basic and safety-oriented as back-up lights would still be an extra-cost option.

Well this project is going to take a different turn, I decided to give it to my dad for Christmas. He has done a lot for me especially in the last few years, and he can't afford a "toy" car anymore, so I figured this would be a good way for him to get one. I am going to try to find some lowering springs(he isn't into bags)that will work on it, and some 17's or 18's at the most, and possibly do some type of exhaust on it for him before I give it to him. If any of you know where I can get some Lowering spring that would work for it, let me know.
thanks...
