Need Help!!! : 67 Cutlass Brake Conversion/rear Axle Removal...

Doing a full disc brake conversion on my 67 Cutlass Supreme. Front is done. I'm at the point where I need to remove the rear axles to take off the backing plates.

Anyone know the easiest way to pull the axles out? Can't see any c-clips in the differential. Having trouble finding "how to's" on the net.

Please help. Anxious to get my ride back on the road.

Thanks!

Hi. If you have the non "c" clip axle, you will need to remove the four retainer nuts behind the hub. These hold the bearing retainer, and also hold the backing plate as well. As you are converting to disc, you can remove them all at once. You will need a slide hammer to get the axle shafts out. Most important tool for this job. If you don't have one, you may be able to rent one from a tool rental shop, or an auto store. Let us know how it goes.
Hope this helps. Jim.

There's an even easier way to pull the axle shafts that doesn't require a slide hammer. Once you have the four bolts removed from the flange, slide the brake drum back over the wheel studs, open end out (ie, "backwards"). Now loosely thread three lug nuts back on the studs, flat side towards the drum. You can use the drum as a slide hammer on the wheel studs and the axle shaft will come right out.

By the way, it's not necessary to post the same question in several forums.
