Different style grill
The 1979 Cutlass had what I have heard refered to as the "waterfall" grill. Where the grill starts on the top of the header panel and goes straight down towards the bumper. The 1981 has the grill that is straight down then kicks out towards the bumper. Unless you change the entire header panel the grill will not fit on to the 1979. I think the only years that had a grill that will swap would be the 1978 and 1979.
