Newbie question about 70 Cutlass.

Okay, I bought a 1970 Cutlass Supreme and plan on restoring it. I just found a 1970 Cutlass parts, but don't know if its a Supreme. I'm waiting to hear back from him. I'm new to owning a cutlass and figured it'd be easier to just ask yall then to search. My question is, are there different versions of the 1970 that wouldn't be compatitable besides a convertible/hardtop? thanks for the help. heres a pic od the project car

The car in the picture is a Cutlass S, the Cutlass Supreme has a flatter trunk and different back windshield. Check this link for a thread with photos of a 1970 Cutlass Supreme.

A lot of things do interchange between the Cutlass S and Cutlass Supreme. The things that don't are the rear windshield and trim, trunk or deck lid, package tray and rear seat side panels. From the doors forward they're the same and they use the same rear bumper. Also there is side trim on a Supreme that's not on a S. John

Lots of non Olds people seem to have trouble with Cutlass, Cutlass S, f-85 and Cutlass Supreme. Like John said, you don't have a Cutlass Supreme. If that's how it was sold, you were mislead. On the + side, there are lots of good aftermarket parts that will make restoring your ride a fun and interesting pasttime. There were also way more Cutlass/Cutlass S models produced than any other model so you might be able to find stuff in the boneyard at a decent price. You planning to restore it to like new, or just a driver?

Some also tend to mislead by claiming a Hurst Olds Cutlass 442. Doesn't mean it's a 442 just because it's got those numbers. 442 was available in all 1970-72 Cutlass models. Hurst was the aftermarket company that tweaked the car with their performance and appearance options.

Like John said, look to the rear section of the car. If it has a squared off quarter panel, it's a Supreme. If it's a ragtop, it's always a Supreme. If the 2 door has the rounded flare over the rear wheel, it's one of the cutlass lines. (Course all Olds guys know that we're only talking 2 door here).

Thanks for all the info, it's helps alot. I haven't bought that one yetand all he said was it was a Cutlass. I"m still waiting to hear from him on it. The one I bought is a 70 Cutlass S, I found out, 2 dr post I was told. Here's a couple pics of it. I was thinking cause mine need sooo much work, it might be easier to buy that one and use that shell instead.

You know what? I think that the post coupe would be a little more to restore, but more worth it in the end. Check the production numbers. Post coupes are way low on the number scale, making them more rare. Yes, there's lots of work on the rear quarters, but I think that by the time you look at swapping stuff from one car to the other, the post is the way to go.

I personally love the look of the non pillared hardtop, but if this was my choice I'd restore the post, no questions asked. In the meantime keep that car under wraps or in the garage. Moisture doesn't take long to find any open metal. the red oxide primer on the fenders and doors probably isn't waterproof.

You're welcome. Here's some pics of a 1970 Post that I found on the web. It's meant to give you incentive. As you can see, once it's all cleaned up, its a very good looking car. I would only change the wheels to SS1 or SS11 because I like them better than cragars on this one. BTW, I'm partial to silver as you can see by my avatar.
