1972 with hurst shifter

Nice to find this olds chat line.

I have a 1972 Cutlass supreme I bought this last summer that has a 350 with a Th 400 and a his and hers hurst shifter. The rear end is a possie. The car was made in New Jersey. It also has 442 emblems on the car. I have no documentation regarding it being a 442. I know it was not available on a 72 Cutlass supreme. Dealer Added? The Hurst shifter is a very strange set up as the counsel and shifter are correct. It looks as thought it came with the car. Is there anyway of finding out through oldsmobile or somebody. Somebody did say they made a cutlass supreme with 442 option only in Canada.

The 72s were an extension of the 71s cause the UAW went on strike. Since the 442 reverted to an appearance package option (W-29) its hard to tell if its a factory made 442 unless you find the build sheet or the window sticker. The grill should say 442 and be recessed, and the it should have the heavy duty suspension and springs. Not that I would know the heavy duty from the light duty by lookin...
If the fender badges were swapped, they would be some puddy/filler on the inside where the CUTLASS emblem used to be.

The car was Built in The USA according to the Vin. Is there the same type of service provided for cars built in the USA? Also the 442 emblems are on the fenders and the grill is the silver honney comb not the cutlass supremme grill. There are no 442 emblems on the trunk. Wouldn't the vin statewhether or not the car was a442 or not?

Hey Tim, welcome to the site. Not for 72, it was not a seperate model after 71, it was an apperance package, the one note is in 72 the w-30's did have a x in the vin so that turns out to be the only year to verify those models by the vin.

How do I find out anything for sure. Is there number I can call to have some research done. It seems real weird that this car has a Hurst shifter in it with the correct counsel. Really weird!

Even if the car was US built if it was sold origionaly in Canada the service Bluevista posted can help you out, otherwise you have to find the build sheet for your car or some other form of documentation dealer invoice etc. I've found the build sheet on a couple cars I've had they stick them at various spots like in the springs behind the back seat or on top of the gas tank etc., however some cars don't have the build sheet with them due to them just tossing it at the factory or someone else finding it at some point in time.

Nothing weird about the Hurst shifter. The W-26 dual-gate console could be had on the Cutlass Supreme. The 442 emblems were probably just added. Thw W-29 442 and W-30 packages were available the Cutlass Supreme *only* on the Convertible.

Does the Hurst shifter add any value to, the car? 5% maybe?

The hurst shifter is certainly a cool option to have in the car, and will add some value over the regular shifter, percentage wise I couldn't say.
