add-on power steering kits available for 1954?
I'm doing a favor for a friend of my Dad. This guy has shoulder pain and weak arms despite being not that old, but is hoping to locate power steering components for a 1954 Super 88 that came without power steering from the factory.
Although the car is in superb shape - from a private museum in California - the new owner doesn't care whether the components in any way de-legitimize the "original" nature of the car. He just wants to be able to drive it a little before age makes driving completely impossible. Whatever works for 1954 might ALSO be something intended for '55 or beyond. Anyone know the answer to this question? |

I had power steering and brakes added to a 54 Super 88 that belongs to a friend of mine. We bought a complete parts car and had the mechanic pull all the parts off. I had to build a crate to ship the sector to a guy to rebuild it. You can send me a PM and I will give you his name since I am not sure I can do that here. I do not know if the 55 is the same. As with a lot of the old cars, the shaft comes out of the sector and goes all teh way to the steering wheel. It really makes the car a lot earier to drive. A friend of mine in Denver has a 54 and put a Cutlass steering sector on it but it took a lot of fabrication. One note, if you use the factory power steering, forget putting dual exhaust on it. Can't be done.

I just received my copy of Journey With Olds today. There is an ad for a guy parting out a 1954 Ninety Eight. Being a 98 there is a good chance it had power steering. His name is Don Jack and he is located in Stratford, CT. His phone is (203) 375-6138 and email is dbjack28@aol.com.
