1971 Olds
Hey Goose, welcome to the world of Oldsmobile! Nice looking car to start with. I live in Southwestern Oregon where rust isn't much of a problem so I have no experience replacing the trunk floor. I do have some parts cars with solid trunks, although they make repop panels that might make a cleaner job and if your very far away the shipping would be high. If you would put your city and state in your profile there may be someone close by who can help you.
I'm not sure what the "S" stands for either, but in 1971 they made several different models on the A-body chassis. I believe the F85 was typically the strip down model, then the Cutlass S and Cutlass Supreme could be stripped down or fully loaded. The 442 for 1971 had a 455, but as far as options it too could be stripped down or fully loaded. There is a laundry list of options, I have a book that shows them somewhere in my clutter. One other thing the Cutlass S was a fastback style like the 442. The Supreme has a flatter trunk kind of like the Monte Carlo of that era. I'm not sure if they made a Hurst Olds in 1971 but that was a performance model built on the Supreme body in 1970 and 1972. This is a great site to interact with other Olds nuts. Then another site you may want to visit is 442.com There are a lot of photos of the different years and models of Oldsmobiles and then the FAQ sections has a lot of interesting information. There have been some posts here saying there are errors in the FAQ pages. My experience has been pretty good overall and if your a car guy just getting into Oldsmobiles there is some really good reading there. Once again welcome to the site and don't be afraid to post any questions or concerns as you learn about your car. John

The "S" doesn't really mean anything. It's just a trim level. From a marketing standpoint it was supposed to imply "sport" but there was never any official designation. Don't get particularly worked up about it.

2blue442...Thanks for the info. I live in Northeast Iowa. How much would you charge for a good trunkpan? I have heard that the re-man pans are made from inferior metal and rust out real fast. By the way nice ride...
