Probably be for sale for a lot longer....
I'm always leary of a build that someone 'just lost interest in'. To me it sounds like "I was building this thing and it's just not working....lost some parts and don't know how it goes back together. You can fix my mess.."

especially since he says "Lots of parts to go with it everything you need"

Why not drop by and kick the sheet metal to see if it's solid? Have a look at the inside and see if it's good like he says....

Or offer to take the difference if you re-assemble it and get it running!
Probably worth $15k then!!

I like when people say, don't lowball me because I know what I got. Ya, you got a car that is all apart and doesn't run. Another is when they say, lots of extra parts. The extra parts are usually the parts that got taken off and are no good anyway. Sheesh.

I have a couple of mechanic friends in town. I'll ask them if they know about this veehicle(sp) and get back to you.
I was also wondering if the motor and transmission are original, since they are no longer in the car. If I look at
the car, I'll be sure to get a pic of the VIN.

Well the standard engine in the 71 442 was a 455 with G letter heads and turbo 400 so I would guess they are original if the car is a real 442. Also should check to see if hood is a factory one with steel bracing underside.

OK, is it just me or is there W30 badges under the 442? Something is there, on both sides, but I can't see it well enough. And if you know what you have, why to you take a picture of the wing with "455 HO"? Maybe someone put H/O badges under the 442.

That car is a Cutlass, not a 442. I already called him about it. As soon as i found out it wasn't a 442 i didn't ask anymore questions about it.

Jay, if the engine is out you know where to look for the stamping pad and check to see if the VIN and engine match? There should be a tag on the right side of the case (riveted on) with the OJ code. Under the code should be 71-OJ-(Serial number) I believe the serial # is the last 6 digits of the VIN also.

Good eye, I blew up the pic and although the resolution is not great they are definitely Hurst Olds emblems there. Yay! That's gotta make it a real HO 442 right?

Did he offer any reason why it was advertised as a 442 when it wasn't or did you just ask him for the VIN?

So it would seem that he's asking WAY more than it's probably worth if he can sell it to an unknowning buyer. I'd sure be willing to buy it for WAY less since it's really just a plain Cutlass.....
Why do these sellers keep misrepresenting cars when they KNOW it's not what the car is, and it will likely be discovered by a potential buyer anyway? If his ad had said '442 clone' at least that would have been an honest approach IMO

Yeah that's what i don't get either. I guess they are just hoping for that buyer that doesn't know or doesn't care. All i know is if that car needs any body work at all that price is to high. Just like what others have said, if someone says they lost interest in the project that might mean that i needs a lot of work. I really laugh at the ones who say they lost interest, or they just don't have the time, and then turn around and say they are willing to take a different project car on trade! lol

HI Jay, Joe here. Have you seen this car around at all or does it look like it's been sitting for a long time. I know there are not a lot of Olds' in Windsor/Essex. I know I would remember this if it had been at some of the cruise nights or a local show. Seems shady.

Hmmmmm...

I just happened to see the car tonight on my way home from work. It's about 5 miles from my place. Now that I'm thinking about this, I saw this car while I was driving by this past summer.
The guy wasn't home tonight but I stopped and took 3 quick pics. The barking dog inside his home unnerved me. I forgot to look for red inner fenders. That sure is an ugly-*** tail pipe.

cutlessjoe (Mr. 2 pictures in the 2012 Olds Calendar Man): I believe that this guy has lived in his current location for about 3 or 4 years. The car looks ok. There is a little rust at either the bottom of the door or it's at the top of the rocker panel. I'd rather look at the car with the owner there.

oldzzy: There's not much use trying to bargin with a guy who is trying to misrepresent his vehicle. Is there?

BTW... Rod Elford is a local engine builder and drag racer (Chebby guy). He did my engine.

I agree about the pipes, maybe if they came straight out the back. I didn't know you could get sink strainers that were oval.

The 442 on the fender has too much space between the 4's, aren't lined up exactly right, and the W-30 is a bit cocked as well. No way, no how.

Actually, if you go to Lowes and get the waterpic 2000 with the pulsating head, it makes it sound like a really big cam and you get 5 xtra horses, guaraaaanteeeed. And....it only cost $60. $20 for each pipe, and $20 for the wife's shower.
