Not originally a W30 *or* even a 442. Anything else?

Yeah, I'm sure there are plenty of better fakes out there...but price and provenance / originality aside, I have seen the car, and it sure looks nice. Has the OAI components and red inner fenders, and is cosmetically excellent. Apparently there is a "disconnect" between the seat upholstery and door panels, which could be corrected without too much trouble. I would not mind owning that car for the right price, and understanding what it really is. I'm not sure its even overpriced by all that much, considerring what it would cost to build such a car. Just my opinion.

Did any of you guys watch the last Mechum in Iowa few weeks ago? There's a fire sale going on with these old cars. Some cars went for what it would cost for a decent body work and paint. Lot's of NICE rides 10K-20K. That said maybe 15-18K for the yellow car in question.

Didn't see that auction, but just checked the Mecum site. Not a lot of Oldses (11) and only 3 442s. One '67 442 coupe, an automatic with AC and CA emissions, sold for $26K. Looked pretty nice from the pics anyway.

Also a '71 442 convertible (auto) bid up to $26K and did not sell. A '69 442 convertible (auto) was bid up to $19K and did not sell. These cars seemed a bit "unremarkable" from the pics.

Presumably these were all REAL cars.

Cowl tag tells the story. Cowl tag says "can't trust seller".

It says "I'm not a 442. And if I were, I'd not be a W30 anyway".

There is a code for the 442, which it doesn't have. And the date code is totally wrong for being a W30, which is a moot point if it isn't a 442.

If ya search Ebay for 1967 W30 the car pops up. The seller skirts the issue and puts a lot of fluff in the ad about what the W30 was as an attempt to lure the novice. Its a typical ploy by some dealers. Maybe if pressed the dealer would give the true story or an excuse that he cannot confirm but this is what was told to him and believed to be true.... famous ad wording that is misleading. Still its a nice car with some corrections needed to be believable however as said the cowl tag tells all.

Goin by the cowl tag with a C 2 on it... should it have had a black vinyl top??? My car has a similar code but it's G 2 and mine has a black vinyl top.

Just wondering...

Should have? Dunno. But it did come that way from the factory.

Probably. I think the tag also suggests the car was originally white. It also indicates that it was not originally a 4 speed car.

BUT..I think I solved the mystery behind the car...look at the cowl tag rivet that's visible; it just doesn't look right. Maybe it IS an original W30, but the tag was changed at some point, haw haw!

Or maybe it was a re-body.

Or maybe someone just added all the goodies they could get their hands on to the car.

Who the hell knows. But the truth is, "who the hell knows" probably applies to many a car that seems legit. I know for a fact (i.e. from personal experience) that having a cowl tag that matches the car's configuration don't mean JACK. I wonder just how many guys out there are deluding themselves / have been deluded as to how "original" their cars really are.

I always was to believe that that 5Y on the 66-67 cowl tag indicated it was a 442, not saying a W-30 not going down that street

Should have a 5V in that position; if a Lansing car, and does not have it, its not a true 442. The "Y" is for deluxe seatbelts as I recall, so "5VY" wouldn't be a bad thing to see either.

It either is a 442 or it isn't. Anything that was not originally built by Oldsmobile as a 442 and has been modified to resemble one should be labeled as a 442 Clone plain & simple.

"Charlie Sheen's " old car ?

This car has been around for a while.... not sure it is for real... Realoldspower website had a couple of threads on it - the concensus was less than authentic - but it is a nice looking car....

Nice car. No pretense of being an "original" car, W30 or otherwise. Lots of latitude in a case like this. No problem when no false claims are made. This would be like any other "custom" car, though the customization is is relatively mild.
If having a car that wins a lot of trophies (but not for being an original car) floats your boat, this is the car for you!

The 442 OPTION in 1964-67 if factory installed will have the V in group 5 of the cowl tag. It was an OPTION and the body-related differences are coded in the cowl tag for Fisher Body workers to correctly produce the body. Is your car a clone if you add an option at the dealership or if the owner adds an option? Gee, you could have a PO1 wheel cover clone car, a radio clone car, or a power steering clone. Get the point? Up through 67, the 442 is not a CLONE if the option is properly and completely installed. It just isn't a factory produced car. It should be advertised and described correctly. I just don't like the "clone" word because we are not talking about faking a coppa (COPO) camara (Camaro) or something like that. Although, I have seen many cars come up to auction as factory produced when they were garage produced. The correct term is "fraud" not "clone" in those cases! See, the clone means you made up something that would only have been properly available as a factory produced special car. GMPD made all the parts available for a buyer to add an option so those cases aren't clones, just not factory built with that option. Check your Oldsmobile parts book from back in the 1960s and you will see that you could buy everything to convert your 66 F85 6 cylinder to a V8, a 442, a Tri Carb 442, and a W30. The Olds engineers wanted every racer at the 66 Nationals to CONVERT (not clone) his race car to a W30 to better his chances of beating those pesky GTOs.

So its ok to call a fake COPO a "Clone" which was a originally DEALER installed option. But not fake 442 which was an option. If you want to get picky every thing ever offered by an auto manufacturer was an option. You had the option to buy the best model if you wanted. Your dealing with semantics here.... either way the vehicles were not originally equipped in that manner when they left the dealership.

The whole point of COPO was that it WAS factory built as opposed to various Motion, etc. dealer/speed shop creations. I have seen several "versions" of what COPO meant, something like corporate office production option. If the only "authorized" way to get the car was to buy the special factory produced car, then you would have a clone by building one in your garage. This would include Thunderbolts, Boss 429s, Chevy COPO's etc. The Fords for example had aftermarket shops under contract to Ford reconstruct shock towers, etc. These special cars and others like them were not accessible through the parts dept. They were not simply options on a basic car, but rather were specially built units. Pontiac would not sell you 455 Super Duty engine parts without the VIN to verify you had one of the special cars. Contrast that with Olds engineers giving the W30 packages to racers in 1966, and offering all the components singly and as a Track Pack package through Oldsmobile Parts Dept. Once Olds put the 442 as a separate "line" (4400 series) in 1968, the 442 was no longer a simple option like power steering. The beginnings of that separation could be seen in 1967 where only Cutlass (3800) models could be ordered with W29 442 option. In 1966, any 2 door F85, F85 deluxe, or Cutlass (3400, 3600, 3800) could be ordered with the 442 option.

Pity none of the links in this thread are active any longer, but for those who recall the car, it was said to have been owned by Charlie Sheen at one point. Too bad the seller didn't wait till now to sell it, haw haw!
