emergency brakes

'70 Cutlass,
I can not depress my emergency brake pedal at all. Where would I begin to look to see whats locked up. Drum brakes on the rear.

It's likely that the cable has seized in the housing. If it does indeed look old replace it.

Probably the front cable that goes through the firewall. Try pulling on the cable from underneath, and see if you have any movement from the rear cables. It is probably the front. If it was the rear, you would have some movement at the pedal.

I agree with Jim, cable. You may be able to free it up if you can see and access where the cable passes through the firewall and be able to insert the nozzle of something like PB Blaster and "douche" the cable well with that, allowing the penetrant to fully saturate the cable. It should, over time penetrate enough to run all the way down, inside the housing of the cable and drip out where the housing terminates maybe under the floor pan someplace.

If the bottom of the windshield was leaking from rust it may be the pedal assembly. I had to replace the one on my 67' Cutlass. The cable was fine.

I had the same problem with my '84 88 and had to replace the cable. That was so much easier and now I have no worries parking on the boat ramp while putting the boat in the water.
