1969 455 Vin Numbers
I have a 1969 Oldsmobile with a 455 engine. It engine has the following on it.
Intake 398662 J Heads 404438 F Exhaust 402295 W 402294 Z Carb 7028251 RJ Block 396021 F. The block is stamped with the Id number 39D115445. It is stamped twice. One row of numbers above another. I have never seen a stamping with the numbers listed twice. Is that common? Also what does the "D" represent? I believe 3 is for Oldsmobile and 9 is for 1969. Any help is greatly appreciated. ![]() |

Welcome to the site! It sounds like you've got an engine that's built out of a couple different things. The intake is correct for 1968-69 big block, the heads are 1970 W30 (if what you posted is correct, those are very rare) The exhaust manifolds are 1969-73 for sure, maybe into mid 1970's. The carb is a 1968 the F block is 1968-71 455. The "D" has me stumped, I thought that was the code for the plant where the car was built but I don't remember "D" as being one of them. Also I've never heard of double stamping. But... there's my 2 cents worth, I'm sure some of the other guys can fill in the blanks. If you end up spending much time on this site it helps to add the city and state to your profile. If your buying or selling stuff others can know how far away you are. Also, there may be a Olds expert just down the road from you who can offer advice on projects if he knows where your located. John

What would happen if say, a Hurst/Olds had to get a replacement block before it left Demmer Engineering? Is it possible that the block is some type of service replacement? Most all blocks would be left blank or restamped but what is the case for a Hurst/Olds. The "D" is also what is not clear to me as well as the double stamping. I think "D" was not used until the early seventies when Oldsmobiles were being built in Doraville GA. Thanks for the reply.
