455 camshafts whats best?
I have a 1970 455 toronado GT I cant find anyone that does a w-34 replacement camshaft. also I've been told the newer cams are better grinds. I'm looking at mondello JM-20-22 or comps extreme energy XE268H, both cams seem to be real close in specs. anyone used ethier one of these cams or have any recommendations. just remember this is not for a cutlass/442 but a heavy 4500-4700 lb. toronado thanks Shane!!!

I have heard of both those cams being used without negative reports except maybe not extreme enough for the true racer. If you are going with an engine to be used on the street with hydraulic lifters and need to keep enough vaccum for accessories, I have heard that 500 lift is the max you want to go without adjustable valve train. Just what I heard/read.

You can call "Comp-Cams" and give them the spec's you want and they will grind you one. Not a big deal, just be sure that is what you want. Like they say more modern design can give you more power and still idel like a sewing machine. Tell them all the spec's of the car and what you have done to the engine and see what they come up with and see if it works for you.

When you get it all back together, use Shell rotella or Chevron dello oil 15/40. It is for diesel engines. It has all the properties for a proper cam break in. If you don't get the lifters with the cam, make sure you get a quality brand. Do NOT use the parts store jepo's.There quality is suspect.
Be sure you also use a quality timming set and be sure to dial in in.

I have the 268H in my 71 Delts 455. I installed it "straight" up, I have a Cloyes timing chain. I put new valve springs, have at least 100 Lbs seat pressure. Idles nice, pulls good to over 5000. I never went pass that, usually go to 4800 rpm's. The engine is lo-comp, Edelbrock Performer, 670 CFM Holley, Crane modual exliminating the points. I have tube headers, with torque tube, 2 1/4" dual exhaust. Small Sat-nite converter, 2:76 gear. It "soots" pretty good. I though about changing the gears but it is a road car but it has some pep. I use Rotella in all my vehicles. The 70 Toro engine is as good as a 455 gets from the factory. I like the Toro oil Pan AND system, AKA 2 trays. Good Luck, Ken

Hey coppertop, make sure you use some of that break-in lube that GM sells and apply it on the lifter lobes of the cam and the surfaces of the lifters and the rockers. Cheap insurance!
Kenny, I would REALLY like to see/hear/ride in that '71 Delta! Looks nice and sounds like a solid highway cruiser!!!!

I've heard nothing but good feedback of the Mondello cam. Supposedly, it makes great power from idle to 5500-6000. It sounds like a great "daily driver" torque cam. I'm thinking of using the same cam for a future 455 build ('70 Delta 88 455 w/"E" heads).
