By the way sorry this is a double post, the site acted up for me the past few days (not sure if it was screwy for anyone else) and I didn't know it had posted so I tried again.

No problem on the double post, I'll delete the other. This will bump it back up, maybe some Alero owners on this week early....

tach/odometer problem

my 99 alero is doing the same thing, a/c. the tach goes nuts and bounces around all the time and essentially drives me insane, while the odometer only displays kilometers.

tired of my alero's "quirks"...

any suggestions? anybody?

I hate to dominate threads with useless comments but hate to see questions go unanswered too, what a dilemma. I really don't have a good answer for either of you but perhaps if you start a thread with that question in the title bar it might get some answers. Sometimes people won't look at an older thread that they have already reviewed and thought wouldn't apply to them. Try starting a new one

And welcome to our site.

The tach going 'nuts' could be the car misfiring. Dash going nuts, IDK voltage regulator maybe. I know later GM cars will have dash problems when the voltage regulator is starting to go. The fix, new alternator.

I replaced my alternator in July. Sometimes when I'd start the car all my gauges would go all the way up, and then all the way back down, and they to when they should be. Happened to a guy I work with Camaro which has the 3400 motor too (earlier gen) It happened to him and the alternator went a few weeks later
