Good Deal or walk Away??

Hi Folks,

I live in Canada and have been searching for a 442 or Hurst for a while. I was out looking at a '87 442 yesterday that I liked a lot.

The good:
- validated that it is a real 442
- the interior is mint - like it has never been used and not faded
- options all working: power seats, p.windows, cruise, tilt, AC (working), T-tops, leather steering wheel
- 442 decals are all there in interior
- console shifter clean and not worn
- 3 owners all were over 40
- car is all original (no mods)
- runs perfect and shifts well
- 85,000 Miles (138,000Kms) - don't know if this is good or not?
- no rust around t-tops, cowl below windshield, floor pans
- dual exhaust in good condition

The bad:
- paint faded
- scratches on paint (probably from kids bikes)
- small dents (bikes again)
- "flaking" rust on the inside bottom of the doors and inside seams of rear quarters
- rear rails are solid just surface flaking rust
- one small crack on the corner of the dash (1/4")
- trim coming off of middle of drivers rear quarter panel
- wheels will need to be again (not horrible though)

He is asking $6000 USD ($6500 CDN) although I think he has some moving room. I think I might offer him $4300 USD - $4700 USD ($5000-$5500 CDN).

My only concern is this flaking rust on the inside of doors and quarters. This is obviously from being in Canada. I am asumming that most cars of this age would have the same rust if they were not driven in the southern states.

So what do you guys think - fair value or too much?

Thanks,
Wayne

Hi Ranzan,

I live about an hour north of Toronto.

I started looking for a 68-72 Olds but the prices have just gone crazy so I thought I would start looking for a mid-80's. They too are starting to increase.

When I was younger I had a 72 Supreme, 84 Salon and a 88 Supreme. Would really like to find a good 442 at a fair price.

Cheers,
Wayne

I think that 6k is a decent price based on what youve listed about it, especially considering the low mileage. I have seen them sell for higher than that recently on eBay, in basically the same condition.
I listed my 87 Salon on eBay last year with a very high reserve, just to see what I could get, and the winning bid was $5200 and its in less condition with much higher mileage.
Ive also noticed that T-Tops add about $1000-1500 to the value. I'm currently searching for a parts car that has T-Tops to add to mine.
I guess it just depends on who wants it, how much they want it, and what they are willing to pay for it.

Go for it!

Used car lots always have an inflated price. I saw two '75 442's pretty much identical, one at a dealer/car lot, the other a private owner. The car lot wanted $9500.......the other was asking $6500.
